Au début du siècle, une petite pension sur la Riviera. Grand émoi chez les clients de l'établissement : l'épouse d'un des pensionnaires, Mme Henriette, est partie avec un jeune homme qui pourtant n'avait passé là qu'une journée. Seul le narrateur prend la défense de cette créature sans moralité. Et il ne trouvera comme alliée qu'une vieille dame anglaise sèche et distinguée. C'est elle qui, au cours d'une longue conversation, lui expliquera quels feux mal éteints cette aventure a ranimés chez elle.
