Publisher's Summary

Explore captivating Viking Sagas.

The period between the end of the eighth century CE and the middle of the 11th is often called the “Viking Age” because this is the period in which Scandinavian people expanded their contacts with the outside world through trade, raiding, exploration, and colonization.

This volume presents a version of Ragnar’s saga compiled from different modern sources, along with information providing additional historical and documentary context, followed by a discussion of some aspects of modern appropriations and representations of ancient Norse culture.

The first section of the book provides historical context for Ragnar’s saga through an exploration of daily life in ninth century Scandinavia and of contemporary Viking culture and history.

The text of the saga itself forms the second part of the book, along with notes giving further information about how this version of the saga is presented and about elements within the story that might not be familiar to modern listeners.

The third section of the book deals with representations of ancient Norse cultures in modern popular media.

Within this book, you'll find the following the Viking Sagas and topics covered:

  • The world of Ragnar Lothbrok
  • The saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his sons
  • Representations of Norse myths and history in modern media
  • The clash of history and drama in the History Channel television series Vikings
  • And much more!

The adventures of Ivar

This is a fun audible, though it is a bit tough to separate fact from fantasy since so much of Viking history is tied into their mythology. This biography does a great job in assisting the user to discern what may be true historical events from the legend.

Tale of Ragnar Lothbrok, Ivar the Boneless,

This audiobook combines a deeper view of Scandinavian society as it concentrates on the heroes of the time or rather the stories about them that had been handed down over periods. Also introduced is the saga of Ragnar Lothbrok.

foundations of Viking society.

The author's introduction is quite helpful for understanding the complexities of the family connections throughout the stories. Nothing in fiction, cinema, or television today is more difficult than the communications of the professionals in these sagas.

Very well translated.

The greatest success for the dredger or skǫrungr of these stories of the Volsungs is for their names and deeds to be recognized for all time. For these myths and legends to live on, easy keys like this are so great. With the help of a dedicated, powerful agent like Matt, I believe they will.

Intriguing audiobook.

It could be a bit more cultured, and I would have favored the fictional story to come after the accurate knowledge, but nevertheless a good guide.

Worthy

This is a brilliantly investigated and well-researched audiobook including lots of new information about the Vikings. Refreshingly new thoughts and beliefs too. Highly suggested.
