Doch kurze Zeit später ist er verschwunden, aber nicht allein: Madame Henriette, die Gattin eines Industriellen, Mutter zweier Kinder, hat ihn Hals über Kopf begleitet. Während die Mehrzahl der Gäste empört ist, äußert der Erzähler Verständnis für die Frau. Und das bringt schließlich Mrs. C., die Dame aus Schottland in den besten Jahren, dazu, dem Erzähler ihre eigene Geschichte zu erzählen. Was nun folgt, ist eine wahrhaft sprachlos machende Episode menschlichen Lebens, wie sie so nur Meistererzähler Stefan Zweig erzählen kann.
