About this listen

A Gotrek Gurnisson Audiobook

Greywater Fastness – an industrial canker in the heart of Ghyran. Foundries and metalworks pump soot and fire endlessly into the skies of the Realm of Life. Dusty streets hide peril at every turn, and attacks by the Dreadwood Sylvaneth hamper the city’s relentless encroachment.

LISTEN TO IT BECAUSE

Gotrek takes on some of his earliest enemies again – the scheming skaven! It may be a different time, and a different world, but the legendary Slayer hasn't lost his knack for dealing with vermin.

THE STORY

Gotrek Gurnisson barges into Greywater Fastness seeking answers as to why his Fyreslayer rune is mysteriously waning. But finding them in the stronghold's clogged and blackened arteries may prove far more difficult than first thought, and with skaven warlocks building something deep underground – something that will cement their place in skavendom forever – Gotrek begins to wonder if he might instead find that which has eluded him these past ages – his doom.

The book might as well been called Elsworn. Gotrek barely appears in this story being relegated to sidekick in a series of novels where he was front and centre of events. Instead we are treated to Elsworn a far and below worse character than the others the AoS Slayer novels have offered. Whilst not a bad character in terms of her personal properties, she lacks the development, cunning and deadliness of Malaneth and has no real arc unlike Amara in Blightslayer. Worst of all she is completely powerscaled to be exactly deadly enough as the plot requires and operates as the effective main character. Gotrek for his part is there mostly to move the plot forward and is so inconsistent in his abilities that he is simultaneously the most deadly thing in one chapter, but is breathless from a small amount of running in another. He is also desperately missing continuity from the previous novel Blightslayer and has no real arc or development except some poorly defined "rune troubles". The final threat of the book is reduced to a background act that Gotrek is thrown into while Elsworn is provided every convenient crutch to effectively save the day in a finale that is both unearned and unrewarding. Keeble delivers a good performance and is the best Skaven voice actor in the business and delivers his constant and very well worn performance for Gotrek. The Skaven engineers who operate as antagonists for the majority of the novel are amusing and for most of the book strangely compelling in their motivation to see their scheme unfold. Sadly a disappointing iteration in the Slayer series, Gotrek needs a clear arc and goal that this instalment is now totally missing.
