Han er oprindeligt uddannet folkeskolelærer og har haft stor succes med sine humoristiske børnebøger, der tager udgangspunkt i skoleklassen og hele dens brogede børnefolk. Søren Vagn Jacobsen debuterede i 1979 med den socialrealistiske "Ha’ det godt, Kaj", som vandt en konkurrence for den bedste danske ungdomsbog. Siden har han modtaget adskillige priser for sit forfatterskab.
