Herr Veilchenfeld ist ein deutscher Jude. Er ist ein ruhiger älterer Professor, der viel liest und in einem Haus in der Nähe der erzählenden Kinder wohnt. Die Geschichte spielt in den ersten Jahren der Nazi-Herrschaft und beginnt mit dem Abtransport des toten Professors in einem Leichenwagen. Durch die Erzählung der Kinder wird nach und nach klar, warum es gefährlich ist mit dem Professor befreundet zu sein als sie erleben, wie das Fenster der Eltern mit Steinen eingeworfen wird und wie jeder öffentliche Spaziergang des Professors zum Spießrutenlauf wird. Schließlich wird Herrn Veilchenfeld noch die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft entzogen. Er sieht keinen anderen Ausweg mehr als sich das Leben zu nehmen.
Gert Hoffmann (1931-1993) war Doktor der Philosophie. Er lehrte u.a. in Freiburg, Toulouse, Paris, Edinburgh und Ljubljana. Nebenher verfasste er Hörspiele und Theaterstücke und schrieb Erzählungen und Romane.
