Who were you before the world told you who to be?

Part inspiration, part memoir, Untamed explores the joy and peace we discover when we stop striving to meet the expectations of the world and instead dare to listen to and trust in the voice deep inside us. From the beloved New York Times best-selling author, speaker and activist Glennon Doyle.

For many years, Glennon Doyle denied her discontent. Then, while speaking at a conference, she looked at a woman across the room and fell instantly in love. Three words flooded her mind: There. She. Is. At first, Glennon assumed these words came to her from on high but soon she realised they had come to her from within. This was the voice she had buried beneath decades of numbing addictions and social conditioning. Glennon decided to let go of the world’s expectations of her and reclaim her true untamed self.

Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanising wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children but one who shows them how to fully live. It is also the story of how each of us can begin to trust ourselves enough to set boundaries, make peace with our bodies, honour our anger and heartbreak and unleash our truest, wildest instincts.

Untamed shows us how to be brave. And, as Glennon insists, 'The braver we are, the luckier we get.'

A wealthy white woman's self help book

Glennon touches on some really important and complex themes that I wholly appreciate - gender roles, misogyny, privilege, religion, queer identity. But all of these themes were touched on only very lightly and the difficulties attached to them were quickly addressed with a repetitive and superficial attitude of self affirmation and inner strength.

Sarah Neilson in the Seattlr Times wrote that it "reads like a self help book for wealthy, white women". And I tend to agree.

Still, the stars are in appreciation of her honesty on why the notion of relaxing was annoying to her and her writing on the dichotomy of religion and in being in a same sex relationship (which admittedly I have not read so much about but was happy to have had an introduction through Untamed).

Every woman and her daughter should read this

As a woman nearing 40, raised in a religon I never felt completely true, still having body issues and a long history of addiction, I can relate to everything in this book. And yet no one would know unless I told them, which I have started doing to everyones disbelief, because I hid it so well behind judgement, perfectionism and a complete denial of who I am and what made me , me. Now I am stepping into my most beautiful and truest self. I am not happily married, I have never ever wanted to live where I am living, and no I do not want to dress corporate and sit at a desk all day ggrrrrrr

Only read this book if you are ready to feel untamed. And absolutely give it to every woman, young and old that you see.

Life changing

This was such a wonderful book that I would recommend to everyone! She tells honest and real stories about her life and the lessons she’s learnt and through these stories you can relate and gain a lot of insight into your own life and patterns and behaviours you didn’t realise you were doing. It’s a powerful book with an incredible message for women but it’s so easy and enjoyable to listen to that it doesn’t feel like a self help book. I loved it!!

One of the best books I have ever read.

The quality of this book is reflected in the fact this is the first time I have ever left a review. I am going straight back to the beginning to listen to it again... and again.

Remarkable!

Today I listened to the entire audiobook. This book should be gifted to every woman who has struggled at any point in their life. I fell in love with a woman who could not free herself from the role of daughter and mother. We are apart though I still love her and always will. I hope that she listens to this audiobook and finally sees the light.
Thank you for writing this! I will gift it to as many people as possible.

This book is everything

This is one woman’s story, but it is a story so truly human that it can be all of our stories if we dare to live by the lessons she has learned. The writing beautiful. I will reread this many many times I’m sure.

Just incredible

Untamed was incredible. An absolute must read - for women, for men, for everybody else. Glennon Doyle writes so beautifully and her words hit right to my heart. There is absolutely something added in hearing the book read by the author. It is as if you are having a conversation with a friend, and there is a wonderful vulnerability and openness that comes with that.
This book awoke me to ways I have been abandoning myself in the hope of preserving peace - and the ways that that has been hurting me. The way she writes about her love for Abby truly moved me. It is so meaningful to read these life wisdoms from a woman who loves another woman, like I do. To see how she raises a family so beautifully, acknowledging that it is not always easy but reminding us of what really matters - to surrender our expectations, to follow the knowing. I was so impressed by the way she does not omit talking about her anxieties when she certainly could have done, instead showing the truest version of her experience of life. Allowing space for that connection with the listener, the vulnerability brings so much power.
I have highlighted chapters to go back to right away but this is a book I will return to time and time again. I will share it with my loved ones and I feel very lucky to have come across it in my early twenties - I hope that I can get down to living as my sweetest, most beautiful version of myself soon. I love with depression and that can be hard, but this book showed me - we can do hard things, and that gives me so much hope.

Inspiring & baffling in equal measure

As a white, gay man I’m probably not the target demo for this. However, so much of it resonated and felt empowering..... But then I started questing stuff. Like Glennon’s uncanny ability to say incredibly inspiring stuff on the spot. Her weirdly contradictory views and her shameless self aggrandisement. Of course that’s part and parcel of ‘novelising’ your memoir, but by the end it all felt a bit ham fisted and convenient.
