About this listen

The third book in Dorothy L Sayers' classic Lord Peter Wimsey series - a must-listen for fans of Agatha Christie's Poirot and Margery Allingham's Campion Mysteries.

'No sign of foul play,' says Dr Carr after the post-mortem on Agatha Dawson. The case is closed. But Lord Peter Wimsey is not satisfied...

With no clues to work on, he begins his own investigation. No clues, that is, until the sudden, senseless murder of Agatha's maid.

What is going on in the mysterious Mrs Forrest's Mayfair flat? And can Wimsey catch a desperate murderer before he himself becomes one of the victims?

It’s seldom one finds a narrator so well suited to a particular writer. Dorothy Sayers’ ability to drive a narrative through characters and their dialogue can be quite demanding, but this chap pulls it off without a hitch. My only hope is that he continues to narrate the rest of the Lord Peter tales.

Great Narration

A solid Wimsey novel, mostly competently read, although the narrator misreads some things (312 Guineas instead of 3½, for example) and often adds in words or misnames characters. The updating of the text to fit current social mores is understandable, but in places it was clumsily done (with a whole paragraph just removed) and I had to check the original text of the book to figure out exactly what was going on, which also let me see that there are literary quotes at the beginning of each chapter which have also been omitted, which is a shame. I think the text could have been updated in a better way, but I enjoyed listening to a book in this series that I was unfamiliar with.

A decent reading with some minor quibbles
