About this listen

Superintendent Adam Dalgliesh had been looking forward to a quiet holiday at his aunt's cottage on Monksmere Head, one of the furthest-flung spots on the remote Suffolk coast. With nothing to do other than enjoy long wind-swept walks, tea in front of the crackling wood fire and hot buttered toast, Dalgliesh was relishing the thought of a well-earned break.
However, all hope of peace is soon shattered by murder. The mutilated body of a local crime writer, Maurice Seaton, floats ashore in a drifting dinghy to drag Adam Dalgliesh into a new and macabre investigation.

Dry Wit, Wry Charaterisation, Fly Mystery

Beautiful English village scenes, the human condition seen through a British lens, gentle reference to strict social mores. PD James delivers delight and dastardly devices in perfect balance.

Dated murder mystery

I have read or listened to many PD James novels over the past 40 years and this is clearly the worst. The characterisation of women, the disabled and homosexuality is so dated as to be offensive. Adam Dalgleish, the detective, comes across as smug, condescending and dull. The setting is a Suffolk village where all the residents are writers of some sort and all unpleasant suspects. The murder victim is a crime writer and also universally disliked. The plot is completely unbelievable and contrived. There is no clever detective work in the solving of the mystery and I was relieved when it ended. As this was one of her first novels PD James can be forgiven.
