The untold story of the killer nurse.

Lucy Letby seemed like a totally ordinary young woman: fun-loving and sociable. Those who knew who say she had a happy childhood with devoted parents, and after university she landed her dream job as a nurse looking after sick babies. She even became a poster girl for the hospital where she worked.

And yet today, Lucy Letby is officially the most prolific child killer of the modern era. Following one of the longest murder trials in British legal history, she's been convicted of murdering seven babies, and attempting to murder seven others. She is only the fourth British woman ever to receive a whole life prison sentence. Still only in her thirties, Letby will die in prison. But although her journey from obscurity to infamy has made headlines across the world, very little is known about her. Meanwhile, her convictions have attracted unprecedented controversy with a growing number of critics arguing that she may in fact be innocent.

So who is the real Lucy Letby? What was she like according to those who knew her best? What happened at the hospital where she worked? And what convinced senior medics and the police that she was killing babies?

Despite trying and failing to appeal her convictions, Letby has maintained her innocence and no one ever saw her harming a baby - which is one reason why this case has become so controversial. Could Lucy Letby be the victim of a miscarriage of justice, as her supporters believe, or is she the cruel, calculating killer that the jury found her to be?

Drawing on extensive interviews with people who knew and worked with her, as well as unrivalled access to sources and documents, this book traces the story of Lucy Letby from primary school to prison, and grapples with the truth about one of the most high-profile murder cases in living memory.©2024 Jonathan Coffey, Judith Moritz (P)2024 Orion Publishing Group Limited

A fair and balanced approach. Valid points raised. I don’t feel that Lucy has been unmasked however and I doubt she will ever say anything more on the matter.

Very fair

I wish they investigated Autism diagnosis for Lucy, she clearly shows a lot of the behaviours.

Well rounded coverage and good narration

The writers did an excellent job of exploring and interrogating the facts of this case. No less than I would expect of journalists associated with Panorama, a program which I grew up watching in the UK. I really liked the progress of the story and how they wove in the facts. The last chapter where they explored the possible clinical functional causes was well placed. I work in the field of child abuse/neglect and understanding very difficult presentations through the lens of what is known as ‘complex trauma’ and, while the presentation and functioning of Lucy Letby would be right at the most subtle but clearly negative end of functional impact, it is probably the best framework to apply to try to make sense of her as a person who did these things which, may I add, I have no doubt she did.

An excellent exploration into understanding

while it doesn't definitively take a stance on whether Letby was guilty or not, it provides all the information you could ever need to make your own view. a very thorough job

Really thorough analysis

Very well researched and detailed. If you are looking for a salacious account of this story, this isn’t it. I have more than 25 years experience in criminal law and I identified only one or two legal points I would have queried with the writers. Other than that, it was unfailingly objective, unlike most books of this genre.

The only query I had was why Lucy was “double-named” every time her name was mentioned. Seemed a bit repetitive.

An objective viewpoint

Thoroughly researched and riveting! Well narrated by the authors. A very balanced and unbiased view of the Letby case. All the keyboard warriors out there should read this.

well researched

Absolutely astonishing how the consultants were ignored for so long and caught up in such an horrific system. Were the administrators of the hospital ever charged with any crime?

Chilling

a well presented, objective view of all the details of the cases, presenting each viewpoint and evoking thought. very engaging, despite being non-ficticious and legal at times.
