About this listen
"Gail writes with humour, heart and passion." (Giovanna Fletcher, Sunday Times number one best-selling author)
Includes exclusive audio commentary from Gail straight from her trail experience
Gail Muller was told she’d be in a wheelchair by the age of 40. At 41, she set out to hike one of the world’s toughest treks: the Appalachian Trail - a 2,200-mile journey that would help her reclaim her life and heal her mind and body. An inspiring, moving, and uplifting memoir for fans of Cheryl Strayed’s Wild and Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love.
As Gail took her first steps through the wilderness of the USA, she had no idea what lay ahead of her, but she knew she felt burnout from city life, lost and broken - ready to heal a mind and body that she had battled with for so long.
From the resilience-building mountain climbs, painful injuries, and harsh reality of braving the raw elements, to the unexpected friendships forged with other hikers and the kindness of strangers offering food and shelter - with every step, Gail started to let go of a past dominated by chronic pain and reconnected with herself in a way she’d never been able to before.
A love letter to the healing power of the wild outdoors and an incredible testament to the strength of the human spirit, Gail’s story is for anyone who has ever felt stuck in a rut, lost, or scared. She shows us that even in our darkest times, it’s possible to find our inner grit, face our fears, and feel hopeful.

All Hail Gail.
The literary badass.
I've never read something so achingly soulful in such a disgustingly beautiful way.
Thank god for your book and what an incredible storyteller you are.
I listened to it on audible on the hike from hell. It was a section of the Australian Alps Walking Track (Benambra section). It was deep bush bashing through a swamp, shoulder-high blackberries and inconspicuous wombat holes. I cried. Alot. Often. Without warning.
I can't even put into words the level of healing that book has had on me. As I was clambering over fire-damaged trees I sobbed my way through Chapter 10. Your words gave me such an intimate 'you too as well' hug. Snot faced and teetering between traumatic flashback "Memories of heavy hands on me in the dark" ...and pissing myself laughing at your electric diction. I was always on the edge of my seat/summit to see where you were headed next. Back and forth you balanced emotion and humour in such a delicate and meaningful way.
I finally understand. The mind is the body and the body is the mind. One cannot be healthy without the other. They are one.
"This stirred in me the memory before the fear. I knew going through the process of getting my courage would bring physical pain with it too. My mental trauma always loved some physical company."
Your book has helped me immensely.
It's shown me that powerful women with traumatic incidents build formidable foundations and do find ways to move forward to enjoy life in the most unimaginably beautiful ways. Thank you for being my trailblazer.
...I wrote and wrote and wrote your quotes all day and just trudged on.
"I was going to struggle but I was going to f-ing do it anyway"
But my god. I screeched every time I heard about F-shot... sorry I meant Buckshot. It echoed through the valleys. I always screeched:
With laughter
With 'f-ing dickhead'
With 'yep been there done that'
With 'Holy f- I wish someone ate him for breakfast'
To be frank, I genuinely think listening to you on audible was the REAL cherry on top. No one outdoes a cornish gal attempting a thick American accent hahaha. 11/10 quality listening.
So Thank You Very Much For Writing That. What a pleasure it was. So... when is the next one coming out?
Thanks again and love your work.
P.S. We should play a drinking game with your audible "take a shot every time Gail says 'F-'". I think we would be dead, but at least we'd die laughing.
Cheers (and hope to see you on trail one day)!
Unlost?! more like "F me up (but in a good way)"
