Publisher's Summary

From the outside, the house in Lakeview Terrace looks perfect, and the Bigelows seem like the perfect family: the respected surgeon father, the glamorous, devoted mother and two beautiful children. A perfect family, in a perfect house, living their perfect lives.

But perfect surfaces can hide dark undercurrents, and behind closed doors lies a very different story. Teenager Zane and his younger sister, Britt, are terrorised by their violent father and dysfunctional mother. Too afraid to speak out, Zane does his best to protect his sister and counts the days until they can finally be free.

One dark, brutal night when their father's temper takes a horrifying turn for the worse, the perfect façade is exposed for the lie it is, and Zane and Britt manage to escape. With the help of their beloved aunt, they rebuild their lives a day at a time, creating new families and putting their past behind them. But a childhood like that can cast a shadow the length of a lifetime. Can Zane and Britt ever be free of their past? Or will those dark undercurrents rise to the surface, forcing them to fight for their lives once again?

One of the best books I’ve listened to on Audible

Usually I listen to audible while I’m driving to uni as it takes a fair while and this book made me excited to drive to uni. I couldn’t wait to turn it back on and listen to more, it was seriously hard to turn off. Very gripping book that kept me interested the whole time

Worst book

I tried really, because I paid for it but I suffered through a lot if it but had to skip the last 10 chapters because it was soooo bad. Lazy writing - the bad guys so bad and the good guys sooo good no plot just Lazy lazy his story emulated here and just added hours of boredom when you knew what would happen. Hated it.

Loved it.

It grabbed me from the first word and didn't let me go until the end. The characters are real people and even though the plot was predictable at times I needed to keep reading to find out the details. An enjoyable read.

Very predictable

The storey went on and on and was the most boring book in a long time. The narrator however was very good.

Excellent story

This audible book was great to listen to because unlike some audible books, the characters were represented by different voices, male and female. Easy to listen to. Also apart from the mystery, there was interesting landscaping knowledge and design to hear and learn. Great advice for females who have to deal with abuse too. Thank you Nora.

okay story, not really romance

Have a mixed response to this. it was largely okay, but not up with her best books. seemed to have a great focus on domestic violence and child abuse, and while quite realistic, is not what i want to have a majority of the book i am reading to focus on, when i was expecting more about the couple and their journey together. i found it hard to relate to them as adults when introduce after first 3rd dealt with male leads childhood. less time spent buiding/learning their characters, and very little time spent on their "becoming" a couple. seemed more like a mush mash of an expose on abuse, and crime novel where you already know whodunnit, with a bit of romance thrown in. i did enjoy some of the lighter dialogue, especially with teenagers, and the narrator is AMAZING - great repotoire of make/female voices and accents.

Disappointing

This was not what I've come to expect from Nora Roberts. It felt like I was listening to three short stories which were trying to be connected. The narrator, one of my favorites, was brilliant as always.

Perfect Currents

Perfect. The right tones. The right words. Everything was just right. This story had me engaged from start to finish. I understood and felt everything each characters felt. So human, so right. Just the perfect under currents.

Entertaining

Nora Roberts has a fabulous way with words, and this book is no exception. I would rather read than listen, but love audio when I have work to do. Therefore companions work so well. Although I prefer male narrators to female, this narrator was not too difficult to listen to. Nora doesn’t disappoint with her vivid imagery and great story telling, I was beautifully entertained

A lovely long listen

This is another cracking story. It has elements of other books, the author’s obvious love of gardens and dogs, and her enjoyment of small town America. The way she writes about these communities makes me want to up sticks and move countries! There were lots of storylines, but they all converged in the end. The characters were mostly believable, although sometimes the good are a bit too good to be true. Nora certainly knows how to suck the listener into the world she has created. The narrator was excellent as always.

Nora at her finest.

Loved it, even though I knew what to expect - still a great yarn. A relaxing listen - 3 stories in one.

Good, but with an obvious plot twist

I loved the book; I loved the characters, I found the subject to be relevant to today's society (in general). But, unfortunately, I saw the villain "coming a mile away".

Engaging but not one of her best

Well written, especially the story of their childhood, but not much of a mystery. It’s obvious from a mile off who the dark figures that seek to hurt them and the story doesn’t build enough to feel truly satisfying. There’s also a LOT of discussion of landscaping if that’s your thing.

Great story to 'take you away'

Beautifully written so that you can see in your mind the scene, the colour and the beauty of the area. Plenty of ups and downs
