About this listen
Under Color of Law is a devastatingly tense legal thriller that operates on two levels: as a gripping, high-stakes race against time and as a profound meditation on loyalty, corruption, and the integrity of the American justice system. The result is a novel that is impossible to put down and impossible to forget.
The Core Conflict
The story begins with a brutal act of political self-preservation. Maria Santos, an undocumented woman who had been shown kindness by local philanthropist Richard Castellano , is framed for his murder by a conspiracy involving high-ranking Tacoma officials and the local police. Convicted and sent to death row, Maria's life is reduced to the bureaucratic machinery of her appeals.
The only person fighting for her is Jake Morrison, an investigative blogger driven to obsessive lengths by his belief in Maria's innocence. Jake risks everything, including his freedom and sanity, by illegally tapping phones and gathering thousands of hours of audio, certain that the conspirators' arrogance will eventually lead to a confession.
