Publisher's Summary

Sam Manicom set off from the UK aiming to spend a year riding the length of Africa on a motorcycle; as told in his first book, Into Africa. This challenging first year was such fun that, in spite of a 17-bone fracture accident, being arrested, and being shot at, he decided not to head for home as planned. He finds passage on a container ship from South Africa to Australia, and a new adventure begins.

In Sam’s second book, Under Asian Skies, you'll find yourself immersed in an enchanting mix of drama, majesty, laughter, mystery, love, and his usual disasters. Sometimes a traveller's plans simply don't work out as intended, but for Sam every mishap is the beginning of a unique adventure; silver linings do exist. You'll travel on a journey across the vastness of Australia, through the twists and turns of New Zealand, and on up into the exotic lands of Southeast Asia. You'll ride dusty back roads, ease along rugged dramatic coastlines, and through history and cultures. Work with fruit pickers, sit under the desert stars with a blond-haired aborigine, and cross paths with a runaway from the police. How is Sam's life saved by a Thai prostitute? And smugglers? Did he really find relatives in the steamy Sumatran jungle? Soak up the magical scents and sounds as the journey continues on through India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Iran. This heartwarming tale will take you on Himalayan mountain roads and paddling through the orange glow of the dawn on the River Ganges. Meet the people who live in villages little changed since the Middle Ages, and share chai with strangers. You'll explore the dramatic organised chaos of the grand cites of India, and ride the historic Grand Trunk Road. This is a two-year journey where every day really is an adventure.

Part 2 of an inspirational journey

Any additional comments?

Once again, Sam continues with his inspirational journey, told in his own words. Taking on a journey that so very few people in the world have taken on and sharing his stories from the road without the slightest hint of ego or elitism is truly a wonderful experience to listen to. Despite adversities, the human spirit prevails and Sam seems to find a way to see the positives in almost every situation, and savours the experience for every thing its worth. if you need a reason to believe the world is not the scary place it can be portrayed at times, just listen to Sam's story and it might just restore your faith in mankind a little.

A Bridge Between Humanity and Adventure.

Sam Manicom’s second book in his series of world travels is a triumph of storytelling.
Continuing his journey from Africa to the Australian continent and then up through Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, Sam weaves a tale leaving you wanting more.
Fortunately, two more books make up this series.
Journey with Sam as he narrates his tales and takes you on an intimate ride.
Cheers!

Sam Manicom Is a Brilliant Storyteller

Sam Manicom's Under Asian Skies is an amazing story about an even more amazing adventure. Sam draws readers and listeners alike in with his immersive writing. Sam reads the book and hearing the emotion in his voice truly makes you feel like you are riding along. A bonus in this story is that we get to meet Birgit (she exists!). Well worth a read or a listen whether your a motorcycle traveler or just like reading memoirs. Fair warning though, you will be inspired!

Another winner!

Yet again, another wonderful read (listen) from Sam Manicom! The vomit bus had me rolling with laughter and near vomit with his impeccable description of events. That's merely one of many tales, each as great as the next!

More enthralling tales from Sam read by himself

a continuation of Sam's amazing journey around the planet filled with detailed vignettes of characters met along the way, lessons in overlanding, and some tight scrapes for suspense factor. If you long to travel, and love motorcycles, or just want to ride pillion vicariously along, this is a great story. Having Sam read it is just icing on the cake. Looking forward to the next one!

still inspirational

As always Sam makes me feel like hes telling me his story as its happening. I listened to this book while on my own bike ride and at times was more involved with his adventures then of my own. Excellent.

Disappointed

This book was more about his bike Libby, repairs and transport permits, than about a personal adventure with anecdotes about human feelings and characters. I was very bored. I don't care about someone's motorcycle diary!

An adventure filled with depth and color

Not just a dry travel log. The author uses the type of depth and color that is more commonly found in a classic novel than in a modern work. What a refreshing experience to be taken into the adventures of an author that says more with his words than what's just on the pages. This audiobook is fantastic!

Enjoyable book

Sam's writings and his narrative are both very enjoyable and easy to listen to. My only complaint is I'm running out of books in this series to listen to!

Can't stop listening

Just as "Into Africa" this is another great listen you won't be disappointed. I love listening of Asia and Australia and this audio is no disappointment. I just couldn't stop listening to it and felt as if I was there with Sam on his adventure. Job well done Sam.

a great riding adventure.

Would you listen to Under Asian Skies again? Why?

Yes. It is great to hear Sams adventures and close calls and how he gets through them.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Under Asian Skies?

Roding through India and problems with getting boat passage for his bike.

Have you listened to any of Sam Manicom’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Into Africa... Both are really good.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and no. I use Audio books while travelling on public transport.

Any additional comments?

Sam is a brilliant story teller who makes you feel like you are travelling with him. The fact he narrates his own books makes it more personal.

While this is about a man riding his motorcycle the bike itself is only the vehicle. .. bit he metaphorically and literally and allows for the adventure.

This book is great for both people who love bikes as well as those who have never been near one.

Fabulous account and extremely good narration

I’ve listened to all of Sam’s books and I have to say they are some of the best listens out there. I genuinely feel Sam has a gift for narration and should narrate other titles as well.

Decent account, badly cut

Decent account of what sounds like a great adventure. Badly let down by the way it is cut. Missing out on many a first, or more, word of a sentence, included in this is a terribly annoying pffht noise. So annoying was this noise and the terrible cut that I am giving up half way through.

I’m “on the road” as soon as it starts

I can be on a train, sitting in traffic, working in the garage... or even riding my R80GS, and Sam’s honest, heartfelt and often hilarious storytelling picks me up and drops me into an Asian Market, an Eastern Border crossing or just onto a different R80GS (Hi Libby!).

Wonderful stuff!
