On October 6, 1973, Ted Simon knew there was no going back. He loaded up his 500cc Triumph Tiger in the pouring rain and said good-bye to London. Over four years he rode 64,000 miles round the world. Breakdowns, revolutions, war, a spell in prison, and a Californian commune were all part of his experience, which was colored variously by utter despair and unimaginable joy. “Well, now I’m committed,” he thought to himself after telling a national TV game show audience that he wanted to ride a motorcycle to Mongolia with his winnings. He felt the fear that commitment always induced in him; he was hoping they might have edited that bit out. Commitments are something he tried to get as far away from as possible, the only other constants in his life being twenty-five years of financial prudence, travel and motorcycle obsession. So there he was, committed to going very, very far on a motorcycle with his meager prize money. Consequently, he spent a winter on eBay and a spring in the garage preparing his $1000 KLR 650 for an uncertain life on the road.

Why do we travel, what are we looking for, and will we recognize it if we find it? With the author’s 50th birthday looming, there seemed a need for something significant to happen. Not seeing an expiry date on his birth certificate made it hard to gauge when to have a mid-life crisis, but he’d almost definitely left it too late.

Story
At age 22, Charlie Walker left home in search of adventure. Fleeing the boredom that comes with comfort, he set off on a secondhand bicycle. The aim was simple: to pedal to the furthest point in each of Europe, Asia, and Africa. He didn’t train or plan. He just started. The journey was an escape from an unremarkable existence, a pursuit of hardship, and a chance to shed the complacency of middle England. From the brutality of winter on the Tibetan plateau, to the claustrophobia of the Southeast Asian jungle, the quest provided Charlie with ample opportunity to test his mettle.

A marvel to hear
- By Kenneth on 03-03-2017
Publisher's Summary
Sam Manicom set off from the UK aiming to spend a year riding the length of Africa on a motorcycle; as told in his first book, Into Africa. This challenging first year was such fun that, in spite of a 17-bone fracture accident, being arrested, and being shot at, he decided not to head for home as planned. He finds passage on a container ship from South Africa to Australia, and a new adventure begins.
In Sam’s second book, Under Asian Skies, you'll find yourself immersed in an enchanting mix of drama, majesty, laughter, mystery, love, and his usual disasters. Sometimes a traveller's plans simply don't work out as intended, but for Sam every mishap is the beginning of a unique adventure; silver linings do exist. You'll travel on a journey across the vastness of Australia, through the twists and turns of New Zealand, and on up into the exotic lands of Southeast Asia. You'll ride dusty back roads, ease along rugged dramatic coastlines, and through history and cultures. Work with fruit pickers, sit under the desert stars with a blond-haired aborigine, and cross paths with a runaway from the police. How is Sam's life saved by a Thai prostitute? And smugglers? Did he really find relatives in the steamy Sumatran jungle? Soak up the magical scents and sounds as the journey continues on through India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Iran. This heartwarming tale will take you on Himalayan mountain roads and paddling through the orange glow of the dawn on the River Ganges. Meet the people who live in villages little changed since the Middle Ages, and share chai with strangers. You'll explore the dramatic organised chaos of the grand cites of India, and ride the historic Grand Trunk Road. This is a two-year journey where every day really is an adventure.

Part 2 of an inspirational journey
Any additional comments?
Once again, Sam continues with his inspirational journey, told in his own words. Taking on a journey that so very few people in the world have taken on and sharing his stories from the road without the slightest hint of ego or elitism is truly a wonderful experience to listen to. Despite adversities, the human spirit prevails and Sam seems to find a way to see the positives in almost every situation, and savours the experience for every thing its worth. if you need a reason to believe the world is not the scary place it can be portrayed at times, just listen to Sam's story and it might just restore your faith in mankind a little.

a great riding adventure.
Would you listen to Under Asian Skies again? Why?
Yes. It is great to hear Sams adventures and close calls and how he gets through them.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Under Asian Skies?
Roding through India and problems with getting boat passage for his bike.
Have you listened to any of Sam Manicom’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Into Africa... Both are really good.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and no. I use Audio books while travelling on public transport.
Any additional comments?
Sam is a brilliant story teller who makes you feel like you are travelling with him. The fact he narrates his own books makes it more personal.
While this is about a man riding his motorcycle the bike itself is only the vehicle. .. bit he metaphorically and literally and allows for the adventure.
This book is great for both people who love bikes as well as those who have never been near one.

love Sam Manicom
I have read and listened to all four of Sam's books and, having met him several times at various motorcycle shows, he is as nice as he seems. His books are honest, open, adventurous, scary in places when things didn't go according to plan... in this case, tailgating a bus on snowy roads in eastern Turkey... if you have any interest in travel or the rest of the world, try Sam Manicom. Beware though, the bug for travel may bite and it can be expensive.😉
