Antes de llegar coincide con Berenice, una joven por la que se siente inmediatamente atraído. Sin embargo, cuando debe dirigirse a dicha ciudad, la muchacha desaparece. En Belvedere advierte que tanto los objetos como las personas allí existentes responden a leyes físicas diferentes a las que rigen el mundo que él conoce.
