In der "Abhandlung über die Quelle der ewigen Wahrheiten" von 1850 erörtert Schelling die klassische metaphysische Frage nach dem Ursprung der Wesenheiten, Ideen, Möglichkeiten und der ewigen Wahrheiten, ein Problem, dem die Philosophie gleichermaßen in der Antike (Platon, Aristoteles), im Mittelalter (Thomas von Aquin, Duns Scotus) und in der Neuzeit (Descartes, Leibniz, Kant) nachging.
