Der schottische Philosoph, Historiker und Nationalökonom David Hume (1711-1776) gilt als einer der größten britischen Denker des 18. Jahrhunderts. Er vollendete den englischen Empirismus, begründete den erkenntnistheoretischen Positivismus und war ein Vorläufer Immanuel Kants.

Hume steckt dabei die Geltungsbereiche von Vernunft, Zweifel, Sinneswahrnehmung und Einbildungskraft ab, wenn er der Frage nachgeht, was man unter einem Skeptiker verstehe und wie weit das philosophische Prinzip des Zweifels getrieben werden könne.
