Plotin, der Begründer des Neuplatonismus, lebte von ca. 205 bis 270 n. Chr. und errichtete die erste platonische Philosophenschule in Rom. In den "Enneaden" (Neunergruppen) ordnete sein Schüler Porphyrios die verstreuten Schriften seines Lehrers.
In seinen Betrachtungen "Über den Eros" aus der dritten Enneade zeigt Plotin anhand des Mythos' von Poros und der Penia, was der Eros sei. Dabei handelt er unter anderem von den Leidenschaften der Seele, von der Frage, ob Eros ein Gott oder ein Dämon sei und vom Ursprung des Eros.
