Die Sehnsucht des immer wieder verzweifelten, innerlich zerrissenen Kleist nach Harmonie, Grazie und Schönheit ist Inhalt der in den Berliner Abendblättern erschienenen Abhandlung "Über das Marionettentheater". Noch bestimmt von dem Einfluss romantisch geprägter Ästhetik haben wir nach Kleist mit der Vertreibung aus dem Paradies zwar die Fähigkeit zu reflektierendem Bewusstsein erworben, aber zugleich das Gefühl für Anmut und Grazie verloren.
Die eigentliche Bedeutung dieser Abhandlung besteht jedoch in der Umdeutung der Marionette. Sie ist nicht mehr Symbol für das rein Mechanische, Unmenschliche. Die Marionette, einzig dem Gesetz der Schwere unterworfen, wird zum Gegenbild aller "Ziererei", wenn sich "die Seele in irgendeinem anderen Punkte befindet, als in dem Schwerpunkt der Bewegung."
