Entertaining.
This is a hard book to review, there was a lot to like, but there was also things that were..... a little too easy. The plot was good but there were elements that I didn't like. It starts when Tom is researching about prepping and stumbles upon the fact that a CME is about to happen. He realises he needs to prepare for it and the first book kind of focuses on that. The rest is their struggle to survive after the CME hits.
For me, a major thing I didn't like was the fact that I felt like everything was too easy for Tom and the rest. Apart from having enough money to buy everything before hand, he also meets someone who is also a prepper and knows what's going to happen, oh and he also happens to have contacts high up in the military. The community Tom lives in bands together too easily too. They seemed to have everything they needed and then some. The plot just didn't flow as well as I liked and felt more like telling than showing. It was a good story, though not great.
In all, it's an enjoyable read and it was nice to read one set in the UK and one where it didn't just rely on guns to survive.
A. W. Dickson read this well. He had good cadences and voices for the different characters and his performance was really good.
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

Loved this book!!
I have read my share of post apocalyptic books and this one is definitely at the top of my list. Not overdone with dramatic scenes of battle and descriptions of firearms and military terms this story relates to the everyday human and community who just wants and needs to survive after a cataclysmic event. I became attached the the characters and their struggles to survive and enjoyed the fact that it brought a realistic human experience to the story. Really enjoyed this book and highly recommend. ..... and it makes me want to move to the UK!!!

Ok
Ok story and a interesting take on a apocalypse but at times the story was ludicrous.
Most of the female characters are portrayed has gossiping feeble women
The narrator wasn’t the best with many of the characters sounding the same

Good plot, great narration - writing could be better
Firstly - having read some reviews, I can confirm I listened to the entirety of the book.
Plus point 1 - Plot
The author well and truly falls into the category of "plotter" (Google plotter Vs pantser) - and has the standard pitfalls of being one.
The actual bones of the story are good, and play out well enough to keep you listening.
Plus point 2 - narrator
I fully rate Mr Dickson's performance, it's very akin to the undead series set in the UK.
Negative point - plotter
A lot of the characters seem a little one dimensional, and it does distract from the story.
Negative point - tense
The author does mix tenses a fair bit, and at times it can be distracting.
Overall - worth a listen

Great idea for the plot
The premise is a great idea and worth a read/listen to if you enjoy apocalyptic stories but a few plot holes and got a bit silly with appearance of a real life well known person (and his family) being involved.
Personally didn't like the story being told in the past tense - from the perspective of the main character reminiscing on all that happened. Sort of apocalyptic horror in the style of 'My day at the beach' by Sarah age 9

Unrealistic and slow
Whilst the author had covered very well what would be needed for prepping, the story itself was very slow. Any action was quickly wrapped up with a neat bow, making it a bit unrealistic and boring really. Additionally, the royal family is brought into it, making it all just a bit too fairytale for my liking.

Excellent
Such a refreshing change to read/ listen to a post apoc set in the UK. Chris Harris joins an excellent group of authors who have produced great stories with a UK reality.
I loved that the characters were every day people living normal lives, who battled for a chance to survive a incredible situation.
The story was fast paced and kept me listening until the early hours! Brilliant!

My cringe-o-meter is off the scale
I got 8 hours of this dribble to go.
Average bloke becomes super duper warrior. Women are meek and submissive .
The ‘hero’ meets prince harry who seeks his advice , the SAS give his missus a berry because she has earned their respect by arguing with one of them.
The hero is bought along on several missions and saved the day (again) because special forces always invite civvies along and need them to keep them on point .
Everyone behaves like its a good ole wheeze in fifties . In surprised they didn’t have to wear ties and blazers
Example - middle of a collapse and a couple announce they are engaged - so the women start crying and the men start talking about a stag night ?????
The dialogue is so awful and the hero has everyone almost seeking his approval in every sentence .
I have just got to the point where the hero has been taken back to an army base because they need his advice ??
This is after the army unit that arrived cooked them all a Christmas dinner and oowered the street with a generator -( wasting fuel- unlikely ) then in the morning there was pastries and bacon sarnies for all
Lmfao - can it get any more stupid - probably. - anyway the narrator is excellent with the voices.
