About this listen

Award-winning storyteller Bill Gordh (Film Advisory Board Award of Excellence winner, National Association of Parenting Periodicals Gold Award winner) presents this folktale live with no script, accompanied only by his own dynamic banjo playing.

There were two brothers who fished every day. They were not having much luck. One brother carved a squid from wood. It really looked like a squid, and when he threw it into the water it became a real squid. Happy to be alive, the squid helped the boy by chasing herring close to shore, and the boy could catch them easily. The other brother wanted to have more luck too.

The brother told him about carving the squid and suggested the brother should do the same. The other brother, though, decided to carve a different sea creature - a barracuda. When he threw it into the water, it also became a real animal - a real barracuda that ate up the herring and chased the boys when they ventured into the water. That's how barracuda still behave.
