About this listen

Felix Allsey is a travel writer with a keen eye for the paranormal, and he's carved out a unique, if only slightly lucrative, niche for himself in nonfiction; he writes travelogues of the country's most haunted places, after haunting them himself.

When he convinces the owner of the infamous Rotterdam Mansion to let him stay on the premises for two weeks, he believes he's finally found the location that will bring him a best seller. As with his other gigs, he sets rules for himself: no leaving the house for any reason, refrain from outside contact, and sleep during the day.

When Thomas Ruth, Felix's oldest friend and fellow horror film obsessive, joins him on the project, the two dance around a recent and unspeakably painful rough patch in their friendship, but eventually fall into their old rhythms of dark humor and movie trivia. That's when things start going wrong: screams from upstairs, figures in the thresholds, and more than what should be in any basement. Felix realizes the book he's writing, and his very state of mind, is tilting from nonfiction into all-out horror, and the shocking climax answers a question that's been staring these men in the face all along: In Rotter House, who's haunting who?

It’s a fun ghost story that deconstructs some of the ghost tropes. I didn’t love the ending but it was ok.

A fun romp

I agree with some of the reviews😏 Hreat storyline, great build up and then a fizzer of an ending. Pity. I had really enjoyed the story but was left disappointed at the end. Still a good listen though.

Spooky

Loved the narrator, his distinguished characters make the story so much more compelling. This one keeps you guessing.

The unwinding of the story

captivating read with good horror stories recommended throughout. I recommend for an easy mystery horror story.

Also there's this raw, candid, emotional gnarliness to it, too. Keen to read more from this guy and I reckon you will be too if you haven't already read him.

Will give you the heebie-jeebies, for sure

This has to be one of the best stories I have listened in a while. The whole story line was fantastic.

The whole story lone

the ending, the last 3 chapters, felt like it was written by a different author who had to find a way to finish it up quickly. There was no where near enough depth to thr characters experience to make that ending plausible and it was even debunked earlier in the book. confusing let down, as the rest of it was slow yet going well.

ending felt like a separate book

This was a nice fun book that grabbed hold of me and wouldn’t let go — such a fresh escape from much of the horror genre I thought Godfrey’s narration suited the text in a special way, making this fun house of horror the perfect tonic for a long day

Fun, tense & satisfying
