Publisher's Summary

September 1942 marked the high point of Axis conquest in World War II. In the Pacific, Japan's soldiers had seemed unstoppable. However, the tide was about to turn.

On Sunday, 6 September 1942, Japanese land forces suffered their first conclusive defeat at the hands of the Allies. At Milne Bay in Papua New Guinea, a predominantly Australian force - including 75 Squadron (fresh from their action in 44 Days) - fought for two weeks to successfully defend a vital airstrip against a determined Japanese invasion. The victorious Australian army units were crucially supported by two locally based squadrons of RAAF Kittyhawks.

The Battle for Milne Bay and victory for the Allies was a significant turning point in the Pacific War, but while it received worldwide publicity at the time, it has since been largely forgotten. It deserves to be remembered.

Michael Veitch, actor, presenter and critically acclaimed author, brings to life the incredible exploits and tragic sacrifices of these Australian heroes in another fast-paced and thrilling tale.

Australia at its best.

I hung off every word learning how it was in the time when Australian men were the personification of masculinity. I dread the thought of how short men fall today. it makes me proud to be Australian to hear how these men stopped the Japanese. I pray we don't have similar scenes with the Chinese in the near future.

Australians unsung heros

A story every Australian needs to hear. Brilliant and moving. Narrator was sensational and book stuck to the facts.

The hell of war

If I wasn’t proud and grateful of the sacrifice made by so many already, Turning Point only strengthens my appreciation. The intimate retelling of the Milne Bay battle, a battle I had previously not heard of, is captivating and an important part of our history that deserves far greater recognition than it has received over the past 80 years.
The brutality of war is truly shocking.

Excellent.

Well written, having worked there in 1987, it made a lot of sense.
listing to the story one gets the feeling of being right there.
was up set to learn what the US General had to say about Australians as fighters. He just could not accept that anyone else could fight.

This story must be heard

What a hero “Silent Cyril” is. And how unsung.

The turning point of the War in the Pacific, Veitch’s work is thoroughly researched. Well written. And exceptionally performed.

This ought to be mandatory reading or listening for every Australian.

Deeply sobering

Not a light-hearted jolly wartime romp, but a well presented factual account of an otherwise forgotten part of Australia's contribution to the war in the Pacific.
Well worth the time spent listening.
Thank you Mr Veitch.

Awesome

Very thorough and well written. Great recount of a largely unknown battle. Author did a great job narrating also.
