He is bristly and detached, and his difficulty in engaging his emotions extends even towards his precious Turner paintings. Narrator Humphrey Bower gives Gerard a matter-of-fact, precise tone that still manages to express an unacknowledged sense of regret as Gerard falls in love with the spontaneous Julia, only to have their relationship fall apart.
