Editorial reviews
Frances Gilchrist Wood’s vividly drawn pioneer tale, Turkey Red is set in the Dakotas in the 1800s.
A mail sled is making its way through its route during a winter blizzard when they answer a distress signal from a cabin two miles away. Risking their safety through ice and snow, the men answer the plea. They find a young mother, living apart from her husband, having trouble with a sick child.
Walter Zimmerman adopts a subtle twang in his portrayals of the Midwestern frontiersmen who populate this tale of resilience and survival.
Publisher's Summary
"Local color" author Frances Gilchrist Wood wrote this powerful tale of a young wife who proves better able to succeed on the homestead frontier than does her husband.
