Publisher's Summary

The star: Joley Drake was born with a legacy of unexpected magical gifts, but it was the gift of singing that made her an overnight sensation - a rock-and-roll goddess trapped by fame, fortune, and ambition. Heated by the flush of success, Joley could have any man she wanted. But there¿s only man who can give her what she really needs.

The bodyguard: Ilya Prakenskii, cool, inscrutable, dangerously sexy, and working in the shadow of his infamous reputation - that of a secret Russian hit man on the payroll of a notorious mobster. He's the last man Joley should get close to, yet when her life is threatened on tour, she has nowhere left to turn. But in the seductive safe keep of Ilya's embrace, is Joley really as secure as she imagines?

Like waiting for water to boil

STORY (romance) - I loved the summary of this book and it's rated 4.3. It's well-written and performed, so what the heck happened? For one thing, I got absolutely sick and tired of hearing Ilya and Joley talk about how wonderful the other was and how much they needed each other, and then there's all the angst about whether or not they should be together. I finally increased the speed to 2X and then ... yes, I could follow the story on 3X speed without getting lost at all. It's the same $hit hour after hour!

There are a couple things about the book that are good, but there isn't enough of either to rescue the story as a whole. Joley is a successful rock star and I enjoyed the band-life atmosphere. Ilya is a sexy Russian bodyguard, and there is a mafia-type plot line to the story which is also pretty good. There just needs to be more story to balance all the stupid syrupy drama. Supposedly this is a fantasy/romance, but the fantasy part is just a telepathic connection between a few main characters. They can "think-talk" to each other. Then there's a special mark on Joley's hand that, when she rubs it, she can get Ilya sexually aroused. Give me a break.

Finally, the mafia action picks up and things get pretty exciting the last hour or so. The ending is romantic and touching ... until the author overdid that, too. If this book had been about four or five hours long, I probably would have really liked it.

PERFORMANCE - She did a good job. I really liked the sexy male voice when she was performing Ilya. Nice job, Alyssa!

OVERALL - This book stands alone, though I believe it is actually Book 6 in a series about Joley's family members. There's some cursing and explicit sex scenes, but not a ton of either. There is some violence, but it's not the thrust of the story and the author doesn't dwell on gory details. I would only recommend this for females who like sappy love stories. Men would not like this book, and I didn't either.

to boring
there isn't much else to say my title says it all
every sexual encounter is the same description.

Not for me

This story could have been so much more interesting if Joley's magical gifts were explored.
According to someone's review, this is book 5 of the Drake Sister's series. Maybe Joley is defined in earlier books. However, Audible gives no indication of a order one should follow. I've read several of Christine's books in years past and had forgotten why I don't care for her books. In this story, the first part of the story is filled with sexual tension with Joley's and Illya's individual emotional turmoil on why they could not join sexually. I would have been much more engaged if the reasons they needed to not give in were explored. In the second half of the story all of the sudden they give into desire and are having sex every time you turn around. Ho Humm. Listening to the variations of velvet sheaths, huge erections and otherwise hot & steamy sex gets pretty darn boring. We all have our choice on what we want from a romance novels, but Christine's are not mine. Like the vision of what's sexy, I would prefer a picture painted allowing one's imagination to take you down the erotic road rather than a play by play of each act. In the end, not matter what words she used, the act left nothing for my imagination and was the same scene each time. Boring. If it weren't for the fact I wanted to know for certain what happened to the kidnapped teenager, I would have turned off this story at the beginning of the second half. I was tempted to fast forward just to find out but I stuck it out. In the end, I was let down on how little significance Christine gave this part of the story.

Fated Romantic Suspense

Joley is the Drake sister born with the gift of spell singing. Ilya is a Russian hit man on the payroll of a mobster.
He’s undercover trying to do his job and also trying to protect Joley.
The attraction is fated. Did he happen to mention that he’s also the 7th son of a 7th son?
Bresnahan did ok with narration.

As good as imagined

This is a fantastic adaptation of one of my favourite reads. I initially read the book a few years ago and was captivated, I have read it numerous times, and is my favourite in the sea haven series. I was initially cautious that it would not translate to audio well. This adaptation has surprised me, it is a great listen. I would definitely recommend buying.
