Publisher's Summary

Here is the eagerly awaited sequel to the international best-selling The Broken Shore.

At the close of a long day, Inspector Stephen Villani stands in the bathroom of a luxury apartment high above the city. In the glass bath, a young woman lies dead, a panic button within reach. So begins the sequel to Peter Temple's best-selling masterpiece, The Broken Shore, winner of the Gold Dagger for Best Crime Award.

Villani's life is his work. It is his identity, his calling, his touchstone. But now, over a few sweltering summer days, as fires burn across the state and his superiors and colleagues scheme and jostle, he finds all the certainties of his life are crumbling. Truth is a novel about a man, a family, a city. It is about violence, murder, love, corruption, honor and deceit. And it is about truth.

A Peter Temple classic spoiled by a mediocre read

Would you try another book written by Peter Temple or narrated by Michael Carman?

After listening to, and loving, Peter Hosking read 'The Broken Shore' I was looking forward to this book, only to realise too late that the narration was sub-par. Michael Carman would do well to listen to Peter Hosking's under-stated delivery and the way he let's the story breath.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Unfortunately every character was interpreted as a nasty piece of work. I couldn't connect with the main character for that reason.

Who might you have cast as narrator instead of Michael Carman?

Peter Hosking

Did Truth inspire you to do anything?

Yes, to check the narrator before buying.

Gripping

Twists and turns, layers of character, surprises, and all brought together with brilliant narration.... cannot wait for the next one

Stick With It

It starts off a little clunky and the dialogue jumps around a bit; hang in there. Once you get use to the way it is written (read) you can settle down and enjoy a really good story.

Disappointing

I liked the first book but the narration was god awful to listen to. I hopped the 2nd one would be better. A bloody awful story way way to many characters that all sounded the same and bad narration and enunciation.
Very disappointing all round

Excellent

Peter Temple seems to connect with my mind in some way. He writes what I see as Australia’s persona perfectly and as much as I love Peter Hosking as a narrator, this guy does an awesome job.
Enjoyed the book immensely and wish there were more. Like now and lots of them.
I’ve listened his books over and over and they reflect Australia.

Over-complicated story of murder and corruption

Despite the very high reputation of Peter Temple as a crime writer, I did not enjoy this tale of murder and corruption. Can the Victorian Police really be so awful - according to this depiction, they use the f-word about six times in a sentence, despise each other cordially, and regard all law-breakers as 'scum' or 'shit'. Reader Michael Carman read the story with appropriate harshness, and I did begin to follow the story about a third of the way through, but in the earlier parts there were a large number of characters with little identification beyond their names, and I could not, or could not be bothered, working out who was who. I wanted to care about the characters, even the lead detective Villani, but really could not.

Peak Temple

The most absorbing and satisfying of Temple's exciting and entertaining novels. Although grim and dark at times, the violence is never gratuitous and is leavened by the laconic Aussie humour and a moral position that is strengthened by compassion and realism.
Great reading, perfectly matched in tone.

superb reading of a superb novel

As the reviewers say, a superb crime novel and a superb novel. Temple's use of brutal profession wisecracking idiom & inner dialogue equal's Le Carre.
