Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Trust Me by Lesley Pearse, read by Sally Scott.

She lost her parents and then was sent far, far away....

When their father tragically kills their mother, Dulcie and her sister are sent to an orphanage. Told that a 'better life' awaits them in another country, they are shipped off to Australia.

But the promises made to the sisters turn out to be lies.

And it seems to Dulcie that everyone who ever said 'trust me' somehow betrayed that trust. So when she meets Ross, another orphanage survivor, and finds he is a kindred spirit, hope swells in her heart.

But can she ever get over the past betrayals and learn to trust again? And can she fight not only for herself but also for her sister?

What a journey

What a great story from the very beginning until the very end. I just loved it. The story flowed well, well written, never a dull moment. Opened my eyes more to the atrocities of children in homes in the 50s. Very sad but we need to know. Highly recommend.

Such an interesting audio book

This is a very sad book, but it is very worth listening to, I honestly couldn’t stop listening to it as the scope of what had happened many years ago is very disappointing

Disturbing but factual

As I was reading this book I was very aware that this could easily have been the story of myself and my brothers and sisters. After my father died in 1959 my mother walked away from us leaving us in care of various sorts. Fortunately her family put pressure on her and she collected us up and brought us to her brother in Australia. After a wobbly start involving again being put into care she remarried and finally provided a home for the younger children. We went to school with children from Fairbridge but were unaware of the substance of their daily lives. I wish we had known.
A very moving but disturbing story very well told.

Compelling reading to enhance your education

It might be fiction but what a can of worms it opens for the average reader. Absolutely full of drama and life no human should have to experience. Makes a mockery of catholic belief. Unbelievable that these traumatic events in orphanages happened in our lifetimes. A lovely romance underlying keeps a balance. So not what I expected but I loved the read the author (this is her second dramatic book for me) narrator fabulous too.

Based on our horrendous past.

One of the saddest stories Ive listened to. The atrocities our fathers and mothers suffered at the hand of adults who were supposed to protect them is sickening and so very sad. This is a historical novel about real life events. Thank you, Lesley, for shining a light on the stories that could very well be one of the most evil truths in our current past.

Expertly portrayed the victims of orphanages

This was an extremely interesting and distressing story to read. I had no idea of the severity experienced by these children. Although fiction based on true facts Lesley Pearse has brought their plight to many.

A must read for any caring person including the epilogue and post word.

This book is a necessary read. Although it is a story shown through fictional characters it must never be forgotten that it has a factual basis.

Wow! What a story.....

I love the detail in this authors books, she really gives you a character that you want to route for, this story was captivating from the word go and one that didn’t leave me even when I had to stop listening, I would highly recommend even though you will find it disturbing and heartbreaking in places, it’s well worth enduring that to see it through

Brilliant

Best book I’ve read (heard) in ages and based on a very sad truth. Very informative about the Australian orphans and only realised at the end that the orphanages featured are real ones. I’m going to do more research on this subject now.
