يأخذ الروائي الأرجنتيني التشيلي، آريل دورفمان (1942)، يوماً من تقويم ذاكرة قُبيل الحرب العالمية الثانية، تحديداً اليوم الذي وقّعت فيه ألمانيا والاتحاد السوفييتي معاهدة عدم اعتداء، وتقسيم أوروبا، سراً، كمناطق نفوذ (20 آب/ أغسطس 1939)، ليسيّر فيه أحداث روايته "ثقة" الصادرة أواخر العام الماضي، بترجمة صالح علماني، عن "دار بلومزبري" في قطر، مُستخدماً فيها أكبر قدر ممكن من تقنيات السرد، ليعرض أزمة الثقة، ممتدّةً من علاقات أعضاء الحزب الواحد والناس العاديين مع السلطة، إلى الأصدقاء والأزواج. "ما كادت المرأة تدخل الغرفة 242، حتى رنَّ الهاتف". من هذا المشهد الذي ولجت فيه باربارا الفندق قادمةً من ألمانيا إلى باريس، بما بدا أنه دعوة من زوجها، يبدأ العمل وسط غموضٍ يكشفه شيئاً فشئياً حوارها على الهاتف لساعات طويلة مع شخص غريب يُدعى "ليون"؛ حيث ينجح في كسب ثقتها لتبدأ الحكايات بينهما نسلاً كل حكاية من الأخرى، وما إن يلتئم المشهد وضوحاً حتى تنقطع الحكاية
