Considering this audiobook was released in 1999—around 26–27 years ago—I can understand why parts of it feel a little dated and, at times, slightly backwards. That said, the overall story and premise are still relevant and engaging. I was a bit confused about the warning regarding “mature themes.” In my opinion, the content wasn’t particularly explicit and often left things to the imagination, which at times felt a little underdeveloped rather than impactful. One aspect that did frustrate me was how one character kept referring to another as an “old woman,” despite there only being a three-year age difference. That felt exaggerated and a bit distracting. I also found it interesting that the relationship between the characters was often described in vague terms like “friend” or “lover,” rather than clearly defined as a partnership until much later in the story.
The narration was another mixed element for me. While it was generally fine, there were moments where it became unclear who was speaking, which made certain sections confusing. I do think a different narrator—or clearer vocal distinction between characters—could have improved the listening experience.
That said, despite these issues, I still found myself enjoying the audiobook overall. It’s a long listen at around 27 hours, but the story held my interest, and I appreciated the core themes and character dynamics.
Overall, an enjoyable listen with some dated elements and minor frustrations, but still worth it for the story.

I have loved these characters for years. Having them in audio book is great. Looking forward to the next in the series.

I’ve read all the books in the Dar and Kerry series and I was happy to discover that it’s now available in audiobook too. Well, Book One, to start with at least.

The story is great and the main characters are relatable.
Dar is a kick ass, no nonsense smart corporate executive but also has a good sense of humour.
However, the narrator does not give life to her character, nor Kerrie’s the way you imagine them when reading the book.
You can hardly distinguish the main characters with the general narration as the voices hardly differ. In fact, almost all female characters sounded the same, you hardly distinguish who’s speaking.
For me, the narration sounded dry and some lines which were supposed to be funny, sarcastic or witty were delivered a little flat.
If you have not read the book and is not familiar with the series, the audiobook might not be that appealing to encourage new followers.

As a fan of the series who has been waiting a long time for an audiobook version, I would have preferred it was narrated better. But great story and still worth a listen.

Read this book and series so many times, but this is the first time listening to it. It did not disappoint. If you’re thinking of starting a series you’re going to love this. Starting as fan fiction of “Xena, Warrior Princess”, it has evolved into a series that has become beloved.
