"Trommeln in der Nacht" war nicht nur Brechts erstes Stück, das in einem Theater aufgeführt wurde, es war auch der Beginn einer großen Karriere. Schauplatz der Handlung ist Berlin im November 1918 in den Tagen der Spartakusbewegung. Vor diesem Hintergrund spielt die Liebesgeschichte zwischen dem Kriegsheimkehrer Andreas (Hans Helmut Dickow) und Anna (Maria Häussler), deren Liebe in den Wirren der Straßenschlachten auf eine harte Probe gestellt wird.
Die Uraufführung des Stückes war für Brecht der Durchbruch als Dramatiker. 1922 erhielt er hierfür den Kleist-Preis und lernte bei der Premiere in Berlin die Schauspielerin Helene Weigel kennen.
