Story
How am I? How am I? How do you think I am? I know in the Before Times the tradition was to reply, 'I'm fine, thanks.' Then you would ask how they were, and they would reply, 'I'm fine, thanks.' And then we would all get on with our lives. But I can't play my part in that pantomime anymore. I cannot say, 'I am fine, thanks,' because (spoilers) I am not fine, thanks.

Where do comedians come from? Why is it that one person is a funny bloke down the pub while another actually makes a living by standing up in front of an audience telling jokes? And where does all that material come from? Well, young Lee McKillop used to wonder that too. Growing up in his parents’ pub, small and wiry in a world of bigger and chunkier specimens, Lee quickly learned that cracking jokes was a way to get attention.

Millions of Baby Boomers got beach houses, free education, jobs for life and a franking credit-fed retirement. But Millennials have been handed a housing crisis, crippling student debt, the gig economy, a cooked planet, a truly broken political system and now wars, inflation and a global pandemic, as a treat. This fully sucks. But never fear–this book is going to fix everything. Through the power of jokes, history, interviews and sass, so-called comedian Tom Ballard unpicks how his generation got here, and explains why we should probably do a revolution.

Join him on a tour of the absurdities of modern life - from Ryanair to Richard III, Downton Abbey to phone etiquette, UKIP to hot dogs made of cats.

We all have a soundtrack to our lives, songs that as soon as we hear them we're transported to a moment in time. As the youngest child, and only girl, in a family of creative types, Myf Warhurst grew up with the music in her. Whether she was watching Daryl Braithwaite on TV on a Sunday night or listening to the crackle of the needle across vinyl as Agnetha and Anni-Frid took her from rural Victoria to Eurovision, music has always shaped Myf's life. Later her love of music (and the realisation that a professional pianist gig wasn't part of the plan) would shape her career.

Publisher's Summary
Comedy has been Shaun Micallef’s guiding light, his refuge, his passport, his lifebuoy, his drug, his mask, his means, his end, his lingua franca, his Self. But it’s not everything.
Join Shaun on a journey from his earliest days as a gangly, bespectacled comedy nerd growing up on the mean streets of Adelaide to his rightful place today as a glittering star in Australia’s TV firmament. Though his road to success has not been without its failures – in fact, many, many failures – only a few of them can be blamed on others.
Part confession, part apology and part guide to surviving being your own worst enemy, Tripping Over Myself recounts Shaun’s continuous evolution in an effort to outrun his own extinction. Salted with scandalous stories of treachery and intrigue in the corridors and boardrooms of Channels 7, 9, 10, SBS and, of course, dear old Auntie, it’s all told with the trademark wit you’d expect from the comedian they call ‘the thinking person’s idiot’.
Critic Reviews
"As I was reading Tripping Over Myself this morning I felt something funny was happening to my mouth. I touched it with my fingers. It was smiling." (Barry Humphries, Australian comedian, actor and author)
"I had to teach this flog the absolute basics. Embarrassing." (Kate McLennan, award-winning writer, stand-up comedian and actress)

Enjoyable journey with Shaun
I have only read a handful of autobiographies but I am really inspired to read more after being taken on this journey of raw and vulnerable admittance through Shaun's history. I have always loved the fast and unexpected traits of Shaun's humour and the autobiography didn't disappoint. It surprised me to hear a very unjaded version of a life more famous than most. A great balance of story telling and quips, my favourite chapter is 9 from the story there, but I won't spoil the reason why. I have also read the first half of the book of unpublished jokes and skits but it was due back at the library too soon haha sorry Shaun, but I paid in full for the autobiography and it was well worth it. Many thanks for the invite.

Delightful and insightful
Had already read this, listened to the audio for Shaun’s accents. It is warmer and funnier listening.
He misnamed a Full Frontal character in audio as he had in print but as this resulted in me rewatching FF to double check my usually infallible Micallef memory hadn’t failed me I will forgive him.

A fantastic listen
Shaun Micallef has been a favourite of mine for some time. I love his style, his comedy is exemplary.
His writing of this book is very humble, well paced, and given the choice between reading and listening, i would definitely recommend the latter.
His style is… i don’t want to say improved because it is almost unimprovable, but certainly there is a wonderfully delightful additional element to have Micallef read this story himself.
It feels very much like he is telling you the story of his life in Australian Television, rather than reading a story he has written himself.
Really enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Hilarious, touching, and an insight to the struggles of arguably Australia's greatest comedian. Read in the classic and charismatic Shaun idiolect.
