Publisher's Summary

Willa Knight: Dweller. Slave. Non-magical being.

In Minatsol, being a dweller means that you are literally no better than dirt. In fact, dirt might actually be more useful than Willa. Her life will be one of servitude to the sols, the magic-blessed beings who could one day be chosen to become gods.

At least her outer village is far removed from the cities of the sols, and she won't ever be forced to present herself to them... Until one small mistake changes everything, and Willa is awarded a position to serve at Blesswood, the top sol academy in the world - a position that she definitely did not earn.

Under the sudden, watchful eye of the gods, she will be tasked to serve the Abcurse brothers, five sols built of arrogance, perfection, and power. They are almost gods themselves, and under their service, she is either going to end up sentenced to death, or else they are going to ruin her so badly that she will wish for it.

Either way, she is in trouble.

This is a full novel, 90,000 words. Book one of five in the Curse of the Gods Series

Fantastic

A new story concept, a new world, truly fantastic. On par with Harry Potter and Tomorrow When The War Began. Female POV. Highly recommended.

Fantastic

I love the main character. I love how we get to know her, how translucent she is and overall how she behaves. I truly feel like I got to know her, which is really fantastic and rare with a lot of 'fast-food' books around. The only slightly annoying ruoccuring issue with the book is the description of time- but even then it's fine. I can't wait to listen to the next book!

Amazing!!

This book is the first of the ‘Curse of the Gods’ series and I absolutely loved this book! The main character - Willa - is a badass main character who has a sarcastic mouth and doesn’t follow the rules. I love her as a character because she is a great role model for those who need more confidence in their life. The relationship that starts to develop in this book between Willa and the Abcurse brothers is something that I am definitely envious about. Together Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington have developed an amazing storyline and even though I have read the whole series, I have decided to read it again and leave a review for each book. I hope you love this series just as much as I do if you chose to read it. I would definitely recommend it. I loved this book!!

Alert! Alert! This is a "reverse harem" series!

This is a light, humorous fantasy novel that in tone, style, and subject matter reads like a YA. The Audible description gives you no idea that as the series goes on it turns into a "reverse harem" sexual fantasy where all of the impossibly buff and handsome brothers are inexplicably obsessed with the main character and have to agree to "share" her bedroom favors. And the author seems to be a lot more invested in the harem and the sex scenes than the world-building and plot. If that's your idea of a good time, have at it. But if you're more interested in the plot than the sex fantasy, or if you don't think jealousy among men is the sexiest possible thing, give it a pass.

There should be a blaring alert on all YA

I love fantasy. I despise YA. I don’t know why all YA heroines are all narcissistic sociopaths. This book is a prime example of a heroine who is a self-obsessed truly awful individual whom we are supposed to believe everyone falls instantly in love with. Throughout the book she cause near constant harm to others and shows no remorse or ownership for her her actions. Instead shrugging her shoulder and blanking her “curse”. It is glaringly obviously where this storyline is going and how her “curse” will turn out to be a “gift”. But I am still left wondering about all the poor dwellers who have had to clean up her messes and suffered injuries because of her. I feel like this type of YA tells girls it is ok to be totally self-obsessed and cruel because boys and everyone will think it is cute. It’s not. It’s really not.

the perspective was weird.

One minute she is believably 18. Then the next, I'm wondering if she's so naive that she's a child. I wouldn't recommend this story to anyone. The performance was good considering how bad the content was.

Good storytelling with a kinky side!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The storyline and voices were excellent. The main character seems to have been ripped off a comedy stage! She is very humorous with the associated insecurities you would expect from a young comedian. The relationships between the characters develop nicely with a very kinky undertone. One warning though -- if bad language makes you squeamish, you should probably skip this one (your loss though!)

WHAT WAS THAT!!!!

Ok first off I NEVER give things 5 stars. If I like it it gets 3. If I REALLY like it it gets 4. To get 5 stars I have to have loved it so much that the moment it's over I want to go replay it. THIS book is one of those rare finds. Honestly I just finished reading 2 series that were both 6 books long and fairly dark and I wanted something based in a different world that would put me in a good mood. I nearly skipped this book until I saw how nearly all the reviewers noted how funny it was. So I caved.

All that said, I loved the book. I had me laughing so hard at times that my sides hurt. :). The authors find a nice balance between humour and realistic consequences. The one down side to this book is that it IS the first in the series which means that most of the book is focused on world building and character development. Also, there are a LOT of characters to meet and get to know and at times you have to be careful or they begin to blur together. But there is a story told fully here and it sets a great foundation for the future books. I can't wait to see where the authors take the story from here but in the mean time, I'll probably be replaying this one a LOT.

Least favorite of the 50 books this year

It took 3.5 hours of listening for anything interesting to happen. I don't care for the main character as she is supposed to be 18-years-old but comes across as an 11-year-old in mentality and actions. It ended abruptly with a "to be continued..." I spent more time judging this story than actually listening to it. Every time a character is described, the descriptions contradict each other immediately. For instance, something like (not a direct quote but you get the idea) "his eyes were light green, but you know, not like that neon green but a green that is more grey, but with more gold in it like a sunset, but still dark.." So frustrating! I am buying the next book just because I need some type of resolution and at least it will be something to listen to when I clean my house.

Strange, confusing, hilarious fun.

I don't...... understand..... what just happened????? I'm just... SO CONFUSED. This book was recommended to me by several different platforms. Goodreads, Bookbub, Amazon, Audible... And I finally threw in the towel just so I could stop seeing it everywhere. Plus, I was pretty intrigued by the Greek gods thing because I just haven't seen that a lot outside of the Percy Jackson books. I knew nothing about it and I definitely didn't know this was about a reverse harem, which is probably good because then I never would have picked it up if I had. .... Okay I'm sorry, but this book is terrible. THERE. I SAID IT. Right about now you're looking at my star rating and thinking, four stars is terrible???? REALLY?? Look, I KNOW. Didn't I say that I was confused?? The story isn't that spectacular. There are tropes galore. Willa can be kind of dumb. Someone is always falling or yelling or bleeding. There's a love HEXAGON. But this book IS. SO. FUNNY. I laughed so much during this entire thing that it's blinding me. It seems like Trickery knows exactly how ridiculous it is and plays into it SUPER well. The banter and inner-monologues that happen are top-notch. And that scene between Willa and the servant Jeffrey had me in STITCHES y'all. Plus, Vanessa Moyen does such a great job! Her voice for Willa is perfect and she has great comedic timing that really played well with this story. FINAL WORD This book is just plain fun. If you want a little bit of romance and a laugh, DEFINITELY try this. I'm both ashamed and proud to admit I'll totally be continuing on to the next book.

Simply WOW!

Okay I'm in love with the brothers. Jaymin and Jane are a powerful combination. The dynamic and chemistry between and and Willa is breathtaking, seriously I held my breath throughput the story. Oh my gods! I cannot wait for the rest of the series. The narrator was on point. Her style was very hypnotic; it definitely kept me inside the story. Made it really hard to put down the headphones 🎧. I hope the rest of the series gets released into audiobooks because I will be waiting...🤞💋

Oh Yeah.

Hell to the freaking yeah. I was beginning to become disappointed with the Audible Romance Package selection. I stumbled across this little gem after being disappointed with my last five books. I can only handle so much dark romance. This. This is joyful. People complain about the childishness of the heroine and I totally get it. I can see how most people would be frustrated with her. But I freaking love it. It reminds me of Usagi in Sailor Moon. It's just... ridiculous and silly and joyful. I keep thinking she's that clumsy because there is more than meets the eye to her. Anyway. I started squealing with joy even more once I realized this is actually a "reverse harem" story. So. Yeah. Hell to the yeah. I'm lovin this. I'm loving the narrator - even if she speaks too fast sometimes. She's cute. She does the part of Willa justice. I'm ready for the naughty adult parts. Maybe? Hope they come the next few books? It's nice to read something again that really builds up to that.

Addicting, funny, and original

Loved the brothers and the main character. Loved her running dialogue with herself. Honestly hilarious. Listened to this book at the end of a road trip and my family didn't get me back until I finished the book since the Drive ended before the book 😂

Only downside is that I am discovering this book 1 with no more available and I'm pouting about it. Wish audible had a way to earmark a series anticipating more books 📚

Strange but fun

This book is...odd. There is a bright, irreverent tone to the writing and engaging characters. However the plot doesn't build and there's an obvious twist coming which I guess they have saved for later novels so it all falls a bit flat. The dynamic of the heroine lusting after five brothers and vice versa means there's not so much of a romance going on, rather a PG orgy. The narrator - as commented by another reviewer - does have a rather rushed style and personally I found the male voices both abysmal and indistinguishable. Overall the confidence of the writing carries it through, but it is quite flawed.

Good story but narrator should slow down

Would you listen to Trickery again? Why?

I would definitely listen to this again

What was one of the most memorable moments of Trickery?

I wouldn't say there was any one part that was entirely memorable, but it is still a good book

How did the narrator detract from the book?

She was really good with the various voice changes and handled the challenge of changing the tones of the 5 brothers well

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were a few moments that gave me the giggles and certainly a few shocks

Any additional comments?

My only grumble was the narration speed. The narrator sounded more like she was speed reading the story which made it hard to keep up on occasion and did spoil the effect of the story slightly.I tried reducing the playback speed but that just made it too slow

Wonderful

Beautifully crafted and highly entertaining first instalment of Curse of the Gods. I cannot wait for the following instalments. Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington are fabulous together. Eve is a fantastic storyteller always bringing characters to life with a unique understanding of human nature with all of it’s flaws and endearments. This is the first time of encountering Washington and I cannot wait to dive into her other stories. I highly recommend this series to anyone wishing to escape into a wonderful new world of the fantastic.

Worth Every Minute of Listening!

I read the Curse of the God series as ebooks and couldn't wait for the audiobooks! Vanessa Moyen as the voice for Willa is a winner for me. I absolutely felt she fit Willa perfectly but I felt sometimes the voices for the Abcurse brothers would blend together sometimes if I didn't concentrate on the slight differences. This didn't take away from the story for me though! I still felt Vanessa gave life to the whole story and the first interactions between Willa and the Abcurse brothers!
