Si el problema de transición de un estilo al inmediatamente posterior siempre presenta arduos obstáculos cronológicos y estéticos, en el caso del románico y el gótico los obstáculos se multiplican considerablemente. Los dos estilos conviven, se entrecruzan y superponen hasta tal punto, que muchas veces es difícil clasificar ciertas obras.
