INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

From TikTok and The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Mayci Neeley, a deeply personal story of love, grief, motherhood, and resilience.

Mayci Neeley and the women of MomTok burst into the center of pop culture when Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives took the world by storm. But the show barely scratched the surface of Mayci’s personal story. From becoming a mom at twenty, to losing her son’s father in a tragic car accident, to going back to college as a single mother, she’s only ever given us glimpses of the challenging things she’s been through. Now, finally, she’s ready to tell us everything.

In this inspiring and darkly funny memoir, Mayci lifts the veil for readers on what growing up Mormon is really like and how it’s strict standards completely blow up for many young people when they get to college. When Mayci arrived at BYU on a tennis scholarship, she was unprepared to manage the temptations she’d been taught were sins. She found herself drinking too much, stuck in an abusive relationship, and on the verge of falling down a dark and dangerous path. Suddenly, she was pregnant at nineteen and mourning a boyfriend she’d been building a future with. Mayci captures the period from college to adulthood with brutal honesty, grace, and humor, offering up a heartfelt portrait of a woman finding her voice and her strength.

All of these trials led to her current love story, her journey with IVF, and of course the inside story of MomTok. Fans looking for a juicy play-by-play on the friend group drama will get everything they want—and then some—but more than anything, readers will walk away with a sense of confidence in themselves and an ability to wear their scars proudly.

Told You So by Mayci Neeley is a deeply personal, candid memoir that explores love, grief, motherhood, faith, and resilience, written by someone many readers first came to know through The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. While the show offered only glimpses of Mayci’s life, this book fills in much of the emotional backstory behind the woman audiences saw on screen.

I really enjoyed this audiobook and listened to it in about two sittings. After hearing Mayci’s story on the show and reading her blog, I was curious to dive deeper. The book closely mirrors the blog in tone and content, though it does expand on certain moments. It’s not a literary masterpiece by any means, but it is an easy, accessible read, which worked well for me in audio form.

The memoir focuses largely on Mayci’s college years and early adulthood—her experiences at BYU, an abusive relationship, unexpected pregnancy, devastating loss, and the complicated relationship with faith that followed. I did find it interesting (and slightly disappointing) that there was very little about her childhood or her life after marrying Jacob. Given how short the book is, there was definitely room to explore more about her family dynamics, her journey back to the church, and especially how she became a TikTok sensation and cast member on the show.

One downside of the audiobook was the narration. While I appreciate authors telling their own stories, Mayci’s delivery felt quite flat and emotionally distant at times, which lessened the impact of some heavy moments. That said, I’m not sure the simple, straightforward writing style would have bothered me as much if I’d read it in print—overall, it didn’t detract too much from my enjoyment.

Despite some choppiness, the book still flows, and I walked away feeling like I understood Mayci better. I loved learning more about her bravery, strength, and vulnerability, even if the emotional connection didn’t always land as strongly as it could have. I also found myself revisiting some of her old TikToks—especially the one she describes where she looks visibly uncomfortable compared to the other girls—and felt proud of how far she’s come in her confidence.

At its core, Told You So is a love letter to love in all its forms: for family, for children, for a partner, for sport, for faith, and for oneself. It could have gone deeper, but Mayci gives readers just enough to feel invited into her story—and for that, I appreciate her honesty.

I've followed Macy's story for a few years now and it's so inspirational how much she has been through but is still so kind and so uplifting and willing to help others. As someone who has also been in a toxic relationship time does heal and finding your person also does wonders ❤️

This book really makes you stop, think and feel. Macey is a generation younger than me, but her story is one that has been repeated through out history and hopefully from her sharing so honestly many will be able to avoid such pain.

Raw honesty

Such raw emotion throughout the entire book. A massive thank you to Mayci for narrating this herself as it makes it so much more compelling listening to her telling her own story
