Im Sommer hatte er dort nicht nur einen Mordfall aufgeklärt, sondern sich auch in die mysteriöse Maia verliebt – nun steht er, bibbernd vor Kälte und Aufregung, wieder vor ihrem Hoftor. Doch Maia hat in der Zwischenzeit einen anderen Mann geheiratet. Als der kurz darauf tot im Wald gefunden wird, gerät Paul sofort in Verdacht und landet in einer Zelle der trutzigen Kirchenburg. Von dort beobachtet er in den langen Winternächten höchst Seltsames: Im Wald kriechen Menschen durch den Schnee und scheinen etwas zu suchen ... Aber was? Und: Haben sie etwas mit dem Toten zu tun?
