Nach La Rochelle zieht es jedes Jahr unzählige Touristen, die in der malerischen Altstadt flanieren, frische Austern schlürfen und an den hellen Sandstränden des Atlantiks die Seele baumeln lassen. Für einen solchen Müßiggang hat Clément Chevalier jedoch keine Zeit. Der Commissaire hat sich aus Lyon hierher in die Provinz versetzen lassen, doch sein erster Arbeitstag hat es sogleich in sich: Auf der Île de Ré wird die Leiche eines prominenten Winzers gefunden, offensichtlich ermordet. Der Täter scheint schnell gefunden zu sein. Doch als am Tour de la Lanterne ein weiterer Toter auftaucht, der in Verbindung zum ersten Opfer steht, ahnt Chevalier, dass der Fall noch lange nicht gelöst ist.
