About this listen

Doctor or Daddy? There's no way Dr. Greer can be both.

He's my patient.

He's off-limits.

He's a twenty-one-year-old young man who's battled with Hodgkin lymphoma throughout adolescence. Given two years of complete remission, Austin Villiers should be out there living his best life. Instead, he walks the wings of the cancer treatment center, spreading hope and smiles.

My patients' lives aren't the only ones he touches. His presence reminds me why I chose this path years ago. But I have feelings for this boy that goes against everything I believe in. He doesn't make it easy when he reveals his virgin heart belongs to me.

It's been a long time since I've wanted to be called Daddy. Austin brings back all those protective tendencies. But how can I break the simplest rule of being a medical practitioner by dating a patient?

Contains mature themes.

At just 21 yo, Austin Villiers has seen more hardship than most, having been treated for cancer since the age of 17. Breaking up with his long-term boyfriend leaves Austin open to pursuing a relationship with his much-older treating oncologist, Dr Malcolm Greer, whom he’s always been attracted to. While Malcolm is concerned about professional ethics, he soon succumbs to his own feelings for Austin and he steps down as his treating doctor to pursue a daddy / boy relationship with the virginal Austin. It isn’t plain sailing for the two: Austin still has health concerns while Malcolm takes a huge hit to his professional reputation.

I just couldn’t connect with this. I get the attraction of age-gap romances and the taboo nature of doctor / patient relationships but I found the vast power imbalance here too great to sit comfortably. The gaps in age, health, education, sexual experience, and salary were all huge and I felt Austin was very vulnerable—he has no employment prospects and still lives with his mother. I also disliked the instalove feel of this: Austin moved from consoling himself about his ex-boyfriend to being in an emotional relationship with Malcolm very quickly. Having had various cancers, I had trouble with the inconsistent tone of this. The light and fluffy relationship felt at odds with the serious cancer themes and the reputational loss Malcolm suffered. 🎧 Voice actor Iggy Toma always delivers the emotional stuff well.

I just couldn’t connect with this 😐
