Story
Between 1917 and 1921, a devastating struggle took place in Russia following the collapse of the Tsarist empire. Many regard this savage civil war as the most influential event of the modern era. An incompatible White alliance of moderate socialists and reactionary monarchists stood little chance against Trotsky's Red Army and Lenin's single-minded Communist dictatorship. Terror begat terror, which in turn led to even greater cruelty with man's inhumanity to man, woman and child.

Story
D-Day, 6 June 1944, the turning point of the Second World War, was a victory of arms. But it was also a triumph for a different kind of operation: one of deceit. At the heart of the deception was the 'Double Cross System', a team of double agents whose bravery, treachery, greed and inspiration succeeded in convincing the Nazis that Calais and Norway, not Normandy, were the targets of the 150,000-strong Allied invasion force.

Story
The Romanovs were the most successful dynasty of modern times, ruling a sixth of the world's surface. How did one family turn a war-ruined principality into the world's greatest empire? And how did they lose it all? This is the intimate story of 20 tsars and tsarinas, some touched by genius, some by madness, but all inspired by holy autocracy and imperial ambition.

Story
This is the first volume in a bold new series that tells the stories of all peoples, connecting historical events from Europe to the Middle East to the far coast of China, while still giving weight to the characteristics of each country. Susan Wise Bauer provides both sweeping scope and vivid attention to the individual lives that give flesh to abstract assertions about human history. This narrative history employs the methods of "history from beneath" - literature, epic traditions, private letters, and accounts - to connect kings and leaders with the lives of those they ruled.

The giant characters of history - from Mozart to Michelangelo, Shakespeare to Einstein, Henry VIII to Hitler, Catherine the Great to Margaret Thatcher, Jesus Christ to Genghis Khan - lived lives of astonishing drama and adventure, debauchery and slaughter, but they also formed our world and will shape our future.
In this eclectic and surprising collection of short and entertaining life stories, Simon Sebag Montefiore introduces his choice of kings, empresses, sultans and conquerors as well as prophets, explorers, artists, actresses, courtesans and psychopaths. From the ancient times, via crusades and world wars, up to the 21st century, this accessible history introduces listeners to the titans who changed the world: the characters we should all know and the stories we should never forget.

Brilliant but overpowering
I was amazed by the quantity and quality of the material in this book by S S Montefiore. However, I found that a little of it, or just a few of the short chapters at a time, went a long way. I was disconcerted to hear about Jesus Christ sandwiched between Tiberius and Caligula, and other juxtapositions were just as unlikely. I did finish the book despite temptations to bail out early, and am glad I did. The reader was very good, and the writer is terrific - but it will be a long time before I tackle yet another book by Mr Montefiore.

Historical Character Snippets and Tasters!
Titans of History is literally a chronological collection of abridged biographies which was, for me, a snippet or taster of the particular individual and perhaps a hook to explore them in more detail as this book offers no references or sources of its information.
The narration is done clearly and well by Steve West (at first I thought it may be the author himself).
The audiobook is broken down into chapters per character and so was easy to flip through quickly, slow down where it was interesting to me, or repeat where I wanted to hear something again.

Great book.
Worth listening. I wonder if somebody has noticed (not from the book), that most of the "Titans" (positive & negative ones as well), have something in common.

Like listening to wikipedia
I was so looking forward to hearing this book but the narration is so flat it put me off buying the Romanovs, also narrated by the author. It's like listening to someone reading from Wikipedia whist they are very tired; some of the characters are that brief; it's a chore not a pleasure. As a physical book it is probably much better.

Disappointed. too general.
Disappointed. Too general a history from a eminent author and no overall analysis of the 'great man theory ' of history. Not seen together. I would recommend to a teenager as a primer though.

Disappointed towards the end.
While his knowledge of early history is very concise Simon Montefiore shows a remarkable inability to transfer those skills to more modern subjects. He totally misunderstood George Orwell’s feeling towards socialism and repeats the right wing misunderstanding about his most famous novel 1984 (I suggest Lynskey’s: Ministry if Truth which who would do well to have read). He also has a chapter on a character from fiction falling for the propaganda about his actions. It is an interesting book but you need to be aware of Montefiore’s right wing views.
