Er brachte einem Esel das Lesen bei, startete von einem Rathausdach zum Rundflug und backte Eulen und Meerkatzen – die Streiche des durch die Lande ziehenden Schalks Till Eulenspiegel sind weithin bekannt.

Die erste Sammlung der Geschichten wurde 1510 unter dem Titel "Ein kurtzweilig Lesen von Dil Ulenspiegel geboren uß dem Land zu Brunßwick, wie er sein leben volbracht hat" in mittelniederdeutscher Sprache gedruckt. Der Schwankroman wurde schnell zu einem der bekanntesten deutschen Volksbücher, bereits im 16. Jahrhundert war er in weiten Teilen Europas in Übersetzung erschienen und wurde in der Folge unzählige Male adaptiert bzw. bearbeitet.
