Publisher's Summary

A shocking betrayal...

Riches. Power. An ancient heritage of pride. The Earl of Druridge wanted only for an heir. So when he learned that his wife was carrying another man’s child, he was filled with a thirst for vengeance. But he wasn’t the one who caused Katherine’s death. Or was he? To his horror, he remembers nothing of that dreadful night, when their last shocking confrontation ended in scorching flame and cold blood.

A forbidden love...

Rachel McTavish, the beautiful daughter of a coal miner, knows something about the fire that took Lady Katherine’s life. In secret, the strong-willed girl strikes a bargain with the desperate earl: He must send his physician to help her dying mother or he may go to the scaffold - and the devil. The earl agrees, but Rachel is still unsure that her revelation will be enough to save him when so many wish him dead.

Passionately drawn to the nobleman, despite all the doubt and mystery that shroud him, Rachel wonders if he can really be a murderer. Or if he is the only man who will ever own her heart....

Very well done!

I hope there are more historic romances by Brenda Novak! This was very good. I have listened to so many poorly done audiobooks lately that I was beginning to wonder if good ones still existed. Here is one. The story of the "shop girl" and the Earl and a murder and a fire and relatives and a coal mine made for interesting reading/listening. The characters were either likeable or not, appropriately. I enjoyed Novak's writing so much I may be persuaded to read her contemporaries and that's not easy for me to say.

Through the Smoke

I loved this book! It’s my new favorite! The storyline, by Brenda Novak, is wonderful! A historical romance that follows the period of time well through the whole novel. It’s my new favorite! I also enjoyed the narration by Justine Eyre. Such a great job!

Was not the best but it was entertaining enough

The story was alright, it kept me entertained even though some parts were a little hard to wrap my head around. For example, why would Rachel being poor give her virginity to the Earl just like that when back in those times they were so uptight about an unmarried woman not being a virgin. But overall, it was okay.

Through the Smoke

What did you love best about Through the Smoke?

I needed to know what was going to happen to the main character in the story. She had been through so much and seemed to have so little.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character because she was so strong and resilant.

Have you listened to any of Justine Eyre’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, I have not.

Any additional comments?

No

A solid book!

This wasn't your typical historical ficton romance novel. There was intrigue, passion, betrayl, cover ups and some much more. I loved it!

Buy The book, not The audio

The narration is awful :( Odd pronounced words, a heroin that sounds om the break of tears all The time, etc.etc. It's just that I did not have time to sit down to read, or else I would-be not have finished this.

Old Fashioned Romantic!

It started slow, but the story picked up and I really enjoyed it. The setting takes place in old school England in the late 1800's I assume, during a time when marrying in ones social class mattered alot.

Hero Yuck

The hero of this book is very unlikeable, despite the author's skill as a story teller. I like Brenda Novak's books but I thought the hero needed a slap upside the head. The heroine needed so much better from her community and the man she fell in love with.
