It was okay
I'm planning to read the rest of the books but this first one had so many things that annoyed me, I could take it or leave it. I came from this authors other series and found very similar issues which I had with acotar- the way she writes other women, flimsy plot and unnecessary head hopping. I saw a lot of repeat characters and instances.
The main character was built up to be so great but her actions and reasoning didn't back it up at all. For someone meant to be so clever and skilled, she did a lot of stupid things and came off as novice boardering naive. And the love triangle is infuriating because I'm pretty sure she won't end up with either of them. It's the same thing this author did in her other series. I guess if you liked her other stuff you'll like this too but I hope it gets better as I get through the series.

Terrible narration
I think the story might be ok, if read differently, but the emphasis is overdone and puts meaning into the words that affects the characters. Only made it halfway through. I’d heard good things about the sequel, but I’m afraid I won’t make it to the next one!

Not for me.
This book was recommended to me and sadly it failed to deliver.
It read more like a romance novel and seemed to be squarely aimed at female readers. I’ve got nothing against that, but it really isn’t what I’m into.
Couldn’t recommend this book. Wanted to quit many times, and now that it’s over, I kind of wish I did. Narrator was terrible, no depth to the story. Simple plot. Just awful.
Read the other one star reviews and they can elaborate more. Can’t quite understand why this got so many good reviews??? What am I missing?
For those who want a truely awesome book, try “The Name of the Wind” by Patrick Rothfus, or “Prince of Thorns” by Mark Lawrence. The writing and Narration of these masterpieces is truely magnificent.
Sorry to the author and Narrator for being so critical. I’m sure this book appeals to many. Just wasn’t for me

Sensational!
After reading Assassin's Blade, Celaena's bid to win her freedom made sense. I thoroughly enjoyed the slow burn romance, the friendships she forged, & some of her past is revealed to us. My heart ached for her & I was rooting for her throughout this book, and once you start reading this book, you will too!! I cannot wait to dig in to the next book in the series but since I'm listening to an audio book & it took me $22 NZD to buy, I may end up ruminating on this for a couple of weeks before I dig in to the next book in this series.🥰

Pretty decent
I really got into this story after a while, to where I just couldn’t stop listening, but it took a bit to get there. The main character was a bit annoying at first and some of the writer’s phrases annoyed me, but honestly I can look past that because I enjoyed the story. Overall, I would recommend it, but it’s not at the top of my list of favorite fantasy stories. I will however be getting the sequels because I just. Have. To. Know. What. Happens.!

Meh
I love the voice and performance of the narrator, if it weren’t for her, i think I would’ve DNFed the book already. The book was 30% interesting and 70% cringe. The “world’s greatest assassin” sounded so immature. She was described as deadly etc but all i see is a teenager.

Couldn't stop listening
I loved the story and the narrator was excellent! Only a few chapters in I got so invested in this fantasy world and finished it in two days (I still had to study a bit in between...). If you love fantasy mixed with cunning drama, a dash of romance and a great bunch of fight scenes, you need to get this book.
Okay, I'm off to get the next one.

Dissappointing
Having just heard another series by Maas, I expected to like this one.
I didn’t. I didn’t like the main character, the love triangle, or how a book about an assassin skipped over almost all of the fighting and action, and focused on the main character reading or eating candy... Or dressing up in pretty dresses.
After listening to the entire book, I don’t know much more than I did and could guess from the first chapter.
Also, the narration bugged me. She miss pronounced a few words, like wyvern (I even looked it up to make sure I hadn’t been saying it wrong myself), and some of the voices she used made it hard to like characters that I othervise would have liked, such as the prince.

Not great
I listened to the court books by the same author and I was the best book I have heard in a while. This is boring and bad. Worst as I was so wanting to like it I listen to it for like 3 hr and it’s still rubbish and I can’t now return it. I really think it had so much potential but is so bad. There is no chemistry between the characters and the choices make no sense. And the story line seems over done at this point... I mean We all know the hunger games....

Did not enjoy
The book didn't really suck me in, character development wasn't great, I felt no attachment to any of them, I don't like that the main character is supposed to be a hardened assassin yet she has no mental trauma from her harsh upbringing and starts swooning over the first two men she interacts with, the bad guy is almost cartoonish, he has no depth or personality beyond being evil, and the writer using wording like "she suddenly felt the urge to kiss him hard on the mouth" sounds like something a 13 year old would write, also the captain of the kings guard despite directly serving an evil murdering king he acts as though death is new to him, seems a stretch, not to mention the fact that this supposed "worlds best assassin" can't escape past a couple guards and vanish into the night...
feel I wasted a credit on this book.

Awful
This is just truly terrible. Don't recommend if you like reading, or fantasy books in general. None of the characters decisions make any sense, and the 'humour' is so recycled and cringy. The writing is pretty bad, and there is no depth whatsoever. The plot is bizarre, as everyone just ignores huge events/red flags, in order to keep the storyline going. I still do not understand why they kept referring to her as 'the worlds greatest assassin' as she seems truly terrible at it, she literally loses her first fight scene. The pick-me girl vibes are awful too, as the character makes comments like 'I don't get on with other girls'. Also the relationships read like a 13 year-old girls fantasy and are incredibly difficult to relate to in the slightest. It's hard to imagine why she'd actually want either one of them.
The narrator's voice is super jarring, and she mispronounces so many words. I couldn't believe it when she mispronounced the word 'shone', I played it multiple times I was so shocked. Would recommend if you fancy a laugh, because it was incredibly entertaining in that respect. But if you are looking for a compelling read, this is not it.

Fantastic
Another really enjoyable book by Sarah J Maas. Sarah's imagination is something to be marvelled at.
I'm very much looking forward to reading the next one in the series!!
Elizabeth's narration is perfection.

Absolutely fabulous.
I have read this book so many times and decided to get the series on audible to listen to in bed when I can’t sleep or when I’m sewing.
Highly recommend this series, Sarah J Mass is a wonderful author and Elizabeth Evans is my favourite narrator.

Bad, very bad
Imo
A really terrible story, reminiscent of The Hunger Games.
I guess if you are filled with teenage angst or nostalgia for the literary level of fan fic we had with the Twilight series then this may be for you. But if you are a fan of the fantasy genre or books in general, then I would not recommend.
Maybe instead try Game of Thrones, or The Gentleman Bastard series.

Utterly, absorbingly fabulous
I loved it! I’ve read and listened to the two other series by Sarah J Maas and was thrilled to see the same narrator for this one.
The bc world building is brilliant and this first book in the series really gives the opportunity to get to know the characters who we are going to be sharing the story with over many books. It was funny, heartbreaking and gave many heart in mouth moments. Just brilliant!
