couldn't get into it

story jumps around and readers voices don't disguinsh them enough so it's hard to keep track of who's who. found it very hard to follow.

First listen, second read.

I love this book series so much and have been loving the narration to capture some of my favourite literary characters!

Terrible narration

I think the story might be ok, if read differently, but the emphasis is overdone and puts meaning into the words that affects the characters. Only made it halfway through. I’d heard good things about the sequel, but I’m afraid I won’t make it to the next one!

Fanciful but inconsistent

The narrator for this book worked really well with the material.. in some places in _spite_ of the material.
For a story about a girl Assassin who just spent hard time in the salt mines, the main character spends a lot of time complaining about the weather and other trivial things. The plot wouldn't get off the ground without you first donning your +6 Suspenders of Disbelief.
In a land where consent isn't a thing, I guess it's romantic for people to go around planting kisses on others or giving them new names without asking (twice in one book!?).
For all the serious silliness, the pace is good and I'm glad that fight scenes are not overly long-winded or technical. The plot is not a chore to follow, and keeps a sense of "who-to-trust?" paranoid tension. I do wonder why some bits are laboured over while other life-and-death competitions seem to be skipped, but who doesn't like a romantic story with a puppy... no?

Dissappointing

Having just heard another series by Maas, I expected to like this one.
I didn’t. I didn’t like the main character, the love triangle, or how a book about an assassin skipped over almost all of the fighting and action, and focused on the main character reading or eating candy... Or dressing up in pretty dresses.
After listening to the entire book, I don’t know much more than I did and could guess from the first chapter.

Also, the narration bugged me. She miss pronounced a few words, like wyvern (I even looked it up to make sure I hadn’t been saying it wrong myself), and some of the voices she used made it hard to like characters that I othervise would have liked, such as the prince.

Absolutely fabulous.

I have read this book so many times and decided to get the series on audible to listen to in bed when I can’t sleep or when I’m sewing.

Highly recommend this series, Sarah J Mass is a wonderful author and Elizabeth Evans is my favourite narrator.
