Story
'I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.' Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root - its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Publisher's Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
The New York Times best seller.
Grand Admiral Thrawn faces the ultimate test of his loyalty to the Empire in this epic Star Wars novel from best-selling author Timothy Zahn.
If I were to serve the Empire, you would command my allegiance.
Such was the promise Grand Admiral Thrawn made to Emperor Palpatine at their first meeting. Since then, Thrawn has been one of the Empire’s most effective instruments, pursuing its enemies to the very edges of the known galaxy. But as keen a weapon as Thrawn has become, the Emperor dreams of something far more destructive.
Now, as Thrawn’s TIE defender program is halted in favour of Director Krennic’s secret Death Star project, he realises that the balance of power in the Empire is measured by more than just military acumen or tactical efficiency. Even the greatest intellect can hardly compete with the power to annihilate entire planets.
As Thrawn works to secure his place in the Imperial hierarchy, his former protégé Eli Vanto returns with a dire warning about Thrawn’s homeworld. Thrawn’s mastery of strategy must guide him through an impossible choice: duty to the Chiss Ascendancy, or fealty to the Empire he has sworn to serve. Even if the right choice means committing treason....

Infallible Thrawn in well performed Fun Adventure
I've loved Thrawn since Zahn's officially trilogy - the most interesting character in the Star Wars universe in my opinion. I'm really happy to see him back in this trilogy which I admit has been fun to read and listen to (even if it included prequel trilogy sillyness in book 2 albeit well done, getting the characters bang on). I admit I have no interest in the tv series and while I acknowledge that watching them is useful to the background and some characters, I got through this book and the others purely out of interest for Thrawn. I'm very much looking forward to Ascendancy... My only real criticism is the way that: 1. Thrawn is infallible - he never seems to make mistakes (other than political which doesn't seem to matter) 2. Most other characters, particularly bad guys are hopelessly one dimensional. Ronan in this book is as stereotype as it gets. That said, I love the story and where it leads, I like the nods to Zahn's original trilogy like Pellaeon, and how Zahn always seems to pull some sort of twist. He is definitely an entertaining writer who usually officers you what you want. Thompson performs well as he always does and the production values are generally high with effective sound effects and music (though it can sound corny) Get this for Thrawn and fun - not for deep and meaningful characters.

Another entertaining book about Thrawn
The story is very good on its own but just as Alliances, it is not up to the stratospheric standards reached by the first Thrawn book. I hope very much that Timothy Zahn will reintroduce Thrawn's Journal in the next book. A new opponent, at the level of Night Swan, would be far preferable than the barely visible Grisks. The narrator has been outstanding in all three books but it is inexplicable how so high level production with so many female characters cannot secure at least one female narrator to partner Marc Thompson.

Great audiobook! not a very good story
For a Star wars book I felt as if the story was very limited and repetitive. The constant undermining and doubt Thawn gets is very tiresom. I really feel like characters should be well aware of how the admiral operates by now. but no... Not much progression there. I really like Mark Thompson as a narrator but he does have a tendency to over act some scenes. but nothing to get hung up on. His voices for individual characters is on point, especially Thrawn. having said that I preferred this book over the previous one. I usually love Vader/Anakin stories but it just didn't work for me. But for all you star wars fans out there it's definitely worth a listen.

Another win for Thrawn!
The ending to the trilogy has come at last. Just like the other two books in this series, it is great. The story in this book is really good. bringing in some names you really don't hear much of in the rest of the universe. I liked the different perspectives, and how you could clearly hear that Ronen had absolute loyalty to Krennic, but also that is slowly faded as the story went on. Something I miss is a resolution for Eli Vanto and Thrawn. It felt like the book glossed over the fact that Vanto never really got a chance to talk to Thrawn. And that did begin to bug me after a while. The performance was fantastic. Marc Thompson bringing exceptional skill and talent to his roles. Fantastic job by him. Overall this story was great. Amazing performance as always, and a good ending to this trilogy.
