About this listen

In Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay, the two protagonists are now in their 30's. Lila, married at 16, has left her husband and the comforts of her marriage and has now joined the workforce. Elena has left the neighbourhood in Naples, been to university, and published a successful novel, all of which has brought her into a wealthier, more cultured world.

Both women are seizing opportunities to flee a life of poverty, ignorance and submission. Yet they are still very much bound to each other by an unbreakable bond.

Critic Reviews

"[Ferrante’s] charting of the rivalries and sheer inscrutability of female friendship is raw. This is high stakes, subversive literature." ( The Sunday Telegraph)
"The Neapolitan series stands as a testament to the ability of great literature to challenge, flummox, enrage and excite as it entertains." ( The Sydney Morning Herald)

What did you like most about Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay?

The language was amazing- those things we think but never record at the time then forget them. The reader was also very clever in her characterisation and in interpreting what is quite a difficult book. It made me want to read the hard copy again to immerse myself in the language.

What did you like best about this story?

The internal monologues

What does Hillary Huber bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

The emphasis on l\words, the interpretation - when I first read book one, I didn't understand it - after listening, I wanted to re read for myself

A totally engaging story

The narration was a bit too dramatic and the American accent unnecessary and somewhat distracting.

An American accent for an Italian novel - why?
