Publisher's Summary

Steve Dangle’s incredible odyssey, from self-starting Leafs lover to sports-media star.

How do you turn ranting about hockey into a career? Steve “Dangle” Glynn is a YouTuber, podcaster, and sports personality from Toronto who managed to turn a 16-second online rant about the Maple Leafs into a career in sports media. From video blogging in his parents’ house at 19 to yelling on televisions across Canada at 28, Dangle has been involved with some of the most important sports companies in the country.

In between tales of Steve’s adventures, both online and off, This Team Is Ruining My Life is also a kind of how-to (or how-not-to) guide: in an ever-evolving media landscape, sometimes, you have to get creative to find the job you want. This is Steve Dangle and his accidentally-on-purpose journey through sports media so far.

Critic Reviews

“Folks always say to me, ‘When Coach’s Corner is on, no one in our house is allowed to talk.’ I reply, ‘Neither am I.’ Now I find myself hushing my own household when Steve is on. Steve says he’s taken a page from us, but I know it’s novel. Enjoy.” (Ron MacLean, Coach’s Corner)

“A wonderful look at the rickety ladder to success in sports media and how one can invent their own way of climbing it. Revel in Steve’s journey from irritated Leafs fan yelling into a webcam to irritated Leafs fan yelling into much more expensive cameras.” (Greg Wyshynski, senior NHL writer, ESPN)

“A hilarious, inspiring account of how a kid who could barely skate managed to navigate a turbulent period in the Canadian media industry to become one of the most unique voices in our sport.” (Chris Johnston, senior hockey writer, Sportsnet)

This Book didn't ruin my week.

Long time listener, first time reviewer or audio books and of Mr Dangle. I stumbled across Mr Dangles work after a particularly bad loss by the Leafs. Steve has an entertaining way of communicating the joy and desperation that every passionate sports fan feels at some stage but maybe doesn't have the ability to convey. I must say though, I do find Steve more entertaining when his beloved team is on the losing side of the score sheet. I didn't purchase this book to have emotional or heart warming moments but I certainly experienced some in the final stages of the book when Steve was discussing personal battle and triumphs in his personal life and friendships.

Ok, I’m a fan!

It was everything I’d hoped for and more. I’ve been following Steve for over 5 years now; and many of the stories we have heard before on the podcast, but it was still so great to hear them again. If you are in the #DangleNavy just buy the book. It’s fun! If you are interested in reading a memoir about the difficulty and struggle to make it in sports media then read this book, you might get a few tips. You’ll definitely get a bunch of laughs. Steve reads this very well, he even breaks a few (own) narration rules, by ad-libing some a sides.

I like it.

If you are a fan of Steve's, you will love his story. From a kid learning to love the Leafs to the frantic and loud hockey personality it is today, it was a really interesting story. If you're not a fan, or have never heard of Steve before, you'll find his story inspiring. All in all, I highly recommend this book.

Far exceeded my expectations

I originally was exposed to Steve’s videos on Sportsnet during the COVID-19 pandemic, because a friend of mine told me to check out “that screaming leafs fan on YouTube.” I found his takes entertaining, and his delivery/banter to sound genuine. It’s refreshing to see someone on a major network who not only carries lots of charisma but genuinely loves the topic which they cover. That being said, I expected this book to be more of the same antics on his YouTube channel, which I would have liked. However, this book is much better than that. It’s a solid and personal autobiography that is surprisingly relatable given that most readers are not media personalities. The way he describes his most memorable experiences attending leafs games and the Olympics evoked the myriad of emotions that I felt attending my first hockey game and seeing my favorite team win the cup in person (Tampa 04). Furthermore, hearing some of the struggles and personal adversity he faced and some of the reality checks he ran into were also quite insightful. One could definitely relate to how he dealt with his early success, struggles with insecurity, and the very human aspects of his story. Anyway, it was a great listen and a great story.

Easy Read For a Hockey Fan

Steve’s book is entertaining to hear. He talks about his path through the professional hockey community and other impacts of his life. He talks of wins and defeats, the defeats were primarily the Leafs.

Our travel companion!

On a long road trip up to Toronto from our current home in Denver, we enjoyed listening to Steve tell us about his personal journey and his insightful and hilarious commentary on our much-beloved and frustrating Leafs. We listened to the entire book straight through and it was a lifesaver on the road. Excellent work!

Outstanding

I have been a fan of Steve’s YouTube channel, as well as the podcast. This book was a fantastic backstory to add context to Steve’s success, The highs and lows he went through during his uphill battle. Truly inspiring, I enjoyed every second. I would recommend this book to everybody, hockey fan or not.

Fly your flag bro

To not love Steve is to hate puppies and sunshine. Steve has an immutable enthusiasm that he gleefully and lovingly shares with anyone within reach. We should all be so lucky to be Dangled. Bro wherever you are, fly your flag and know you're awesome.

Can't recommend enough

Even if you're not a hockey fan enjoy the great delivery by the guy who has lived the ups and down on his journey so far. My first audiobook and it was a sincere pleasure.
