Summary
Award-winning and bestselling powerhouse author Kennedy Ryan is back with a compelling new novel in her Skyland series, following Before I Let Go.
Soledad Barnes has her life all planned out. She plans everything. She designs everything. She fixes everything. But none of her varied talents can save her when catastrophe strikes, and the life she built with the man who was supposed to be her forever, goes poof in a cloud of betrayal and disillusion.
But there is no time to pout or sulk, or even grieve the life she lost. She's too busy keeping a roof over her daughters' heads and food on the table. And in the process of saving them all, Soledad rediscovers herself. From the ashes of a life burned to the ground, something bold and new can rise.
But then an unlikely man enters the picture - the forbidden one, the one she shouldn't want but can't seem to resist. She's lost it all before and refuses to repeat her mistakes. Can she trust him? Can she trust herself?
After all she's lost . . . and found . . . can she be brave enough to make room for what could be?
For fans of Tia Williams and Colleen Hoover comes a deeply moving and personal novel about sacrifice, self-reliance, and finding true happiness from 'one of the finest romance writers of our age' Entertainment Weekly

Ryan’s writing continues to feel so intentional - emotionally intelligent, sharp, and incredibly perceptive. She has this way of capturing life in all its messiness without ever losing the thread of hope running underneath. Nothing feels rushed or glossed over. Every moment, especially the difficult ones, is given the space to land exactly as it should.
I resonated deeply with Soledad and everything she carries. Watching her move through adversity - rebuilding her life, finding her voice, and learning to stand up for herself and her daughters- felt powerful in a way that quietly builds over time. Her growth isn’t simplified or rushed; it’s deliberate, layered, and earned in a way that makes you feel every step of it.
Judah is such a strong counterpart to that journey. I really appreciated how he shows up with steadiness and care, while also being honest about his own needs. That balance adds so much depth to their relationship - it never feels one-sided. Instead, their connection grows through communication, mutual respect, and a willingness to be vulnerable in ways that feel real and grounded.
The audiobook narration by Jakobi Diem and Inés del Castillo elevates the story even further. There’s a quiet intimacy to their performances that draws you in completely - every pause, every shift in tone, every moment of vulnerability feels intentional and lived-in.
Reading this as a buddy read made it even more special. Ryan writes such strong, complex women, and I’m really loving exploring this series alongside a friend. There’s something about these books that invites reflection and conversation, and I already can’t wait to continue.
Final Thoughts:
This is contemporary romance at its most thoughtful and emotionally resonant. It’s about resilience, self-worth, and the kind of love that is built - not assumed. The kind that requires honesty, growth, and showing up fully. Another incredibly impactful instalment in the series, and one I would wholeheartedly recommend.

I loved that Sol took in the journey of finding herself and re-creating herself apart from her marriage, I just felt this went on for too long. Personally I think the book could have been half as long and still delivered the same impact/message. There was alot of filler chapters which felt unnecessary & I did have to listen to the second part over like 2 months (I usually chew through a good audiobook). Overall love the story, right idea maybe wrong execution? I’m no author & don’t know what it takes to write a book, personal preference could have been shorter! Still would recommend the read to friends.
Great Story Telling!
