He also cites a study that looked at people of all BMIs and ranked risk of death statistically, but the study included all causes of death—not just health based deaths. All causes would mean car crashes, slips off cliffs, drowning, etc. He uses this study to say that overweight classed people live statistically longer lives than healthy classed people. However, he then compared the risk statistic for overweight people to those who smoke—and didn’t cite which study he got his smoking death rates from, as well as whether or not that study included all causes of death, too (or only health-based ones). There are so many factors which could cause healthy weighted people by the BMI in that study to die sooner—for example, having the confidence to get out of the house and do more, thereby increasing risk of death by car crash, etc.
While I agree the BMI is an unscientific measure of health, from what I’ve heard—and I’ve heard enough—this author is just as unscientific. So disappointed.
