About this listen

The first book in the No. 1 global bestselling They Both Die at the End series. What if you could find out your death date from a single phone call? Death-Cast is calling . . . will you answer?

‘If They Both Die at the End broke your heart and put it back together again, be prepared for this novel to do the same. A tender, sad, hopeful and youthful story that deserves as much love as its predecessor.’ Culturefly
'[A] heart-pounding story [full] of emotion and suspense.' Kirkus
'An extraordinary book with a riveting plot.' Booklist

A love story with a difference - an unforgettable tale of life, loss and making each day count.

On September 5th, a little after midnight, Death-Cast calls Mateo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio to give them some bad news: they're going to die today. Mateo and Rufus are total strangers, but, for different reasons, they're both looking to make a new friend on their End Day. The good news: there's an app for that. It's called the Last Friend, and through it, Rufus and Mateo are about to meet up for one last great adventure - to live a lifetime in a single day.

Another beautiful, heartbreaking and life-affirming book from the brilliant Adam Silvera, author of More Happy Than Not, History Is All You Left Me, What If It's Us, Here's To Us and the Infinity Cycle series.

I stayed up listening until 3am because I had to know the ending. Also Robbie Daymond is fantastic as the voice of Rufus

Beautiful and terrifying story. So clever and thought provoking. You felt a part of the main character’s every moment through fantastic story telling and narration and the sub characters connection really demonstrated ‘the butterfly effect’. I already want to read it again and then write a thesis on it!!

Amazing!

the actors/narrators for this audiobook was not very good at distinguishing between internal thoughts and dialogue. At times it was impossible to tell if the passage I had just heard was something the character had thought or had actually said aloud. It was especially bad for Mateo

difficult to understand performance

Could not put it down. Got me thinking about how I live my life. What an inspiration to live each day like it was the last.

an absolute tear jerker, but very well written, great characters, and left me with lots to think about and reflect on.

Amazing and devastating

One element of this book that I always came back to, was whether the advancements in technology in part helps steer the protagonists towards their deaths. While I liked the book, I didn’t LOVE it.

Makes you think

The book was good although it was really difficult to distinguish between the voices at times

Not your usual storyline

I think this book is a great example that:
- Beautiful writing doesn’t have to be flowery or overly-descriptive.
- A book can be meaningful and reflective but still light and fun.
- something doesn’t have to be pretentious to be poetic.
The narration reflects this balance seamlessly.
I guess it was just really good to spend time reflecting on the aspects of death and mortality in a way the had lightness of being.
Here’s a question for y’all: What do you think is the role of self-fulfilling prophecy?

A lightness of being
