Story
Tara Westover and her family grew up preparing for the End of Days but, according to the government, she didn’t exist. She hadn’t been registered for a birth certificate. She had no school records because she’d never set foot in a classroom, and no medical records because her father didn’t believe in hospitals. As she grew older, her father became more radical and her brother more violent. At 16, Tara knew she had to leave home. In doing so she discovered both the transformative power of education, and the price she had to pay for it.

Bland story
This book is a very bland story of the grandchildren of twins living in two very different worlds. There are glimpses of great writing but the author chooses to not explain a lot of things which weakened the story line for me. The narrator does not do a great job of different voices so it becomes challenging to follow the story line audibly

A charming novella
I really enjoyed this story and was left wanting to know more about what happened to the characters.
The narrator gave a really good delivery that while sounding natural was a subtle and skilful, making the story come alive.
My only disappointment, and this was probably because I was enjoyed the narrative, was how the author summed up the characters lives from 1981 onwards in a few short sentences. The End...... It felt like they didn't know where/how to finish.

Beyond boring
I had high expectations of this boo when first recommended for book club but those expectations quickly disappeared. Not sure if it’s the slow most boring monotone voice of the narrator or the slooooow story itself that seemed to ha e put me to sleep time and time agin as I struggled to finish. The only reason I didn’t abandon four chapters in was the fact that the book was to be discussed for the month.
I too am a child ant product of immigrant patents that initially struggled leaving their country and establishing themselves as citizens of Australia in the 60’s everyone is different I get that but I feel there should have been a lot more joy added to the pages rather than page after page of depressing stories.
