About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This audiobook is read by Olivia Vinall, and Elif Shafak reads the Note to Reader at the end of the story.

This is the story of one lost poem, two great rivers, and three remarkable lives – all connected by a single drop of water.

In the ruins of Nineveh, that ancient city of Mesopotamia, there lies hidden in the sand fragments of a long-forgotten poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh.

In Victorian London, an extraordinary child is born at the edge of the dirt-black Thames. Arthur’s only chance of escaping poverty is his brilliant memory. When his gift earns him a spot as an apprentice at a printing press, Arthur’s world opens up far beyond the slums, with one book soon sending him across the seas: Nineveh and Its Remains.

In 2014 Turkey, Narin, a Yazidi girl living by the River Tigris, waits to be baptised with water brought from the holy sit of Lalish in Iraq. The ceremony is cruelly interrupted, and soon Narin and her grandmother must journey across war-torn lands in the hope of reaching the sacred valley of their people.

In 2018 London, broken-hearted Zaleekhah, a hydrologist, moves to a houseboat on the Thames to escape the wreckage of her marriage. Zaleekhah foresees a life drained of all love and meaning – until an unexpected connection to her homeland changes everything.

A dazzling feat of storytelling from one of the greatest writers of our time, Elif Shafak’s There are Rivers in the Sky is a rich, sweeping novel that spans centuries, continents and cultures, entwined by rivers, rains, and waterdrops:

‘Water remembers. It is humans who forget.’

It has been a long time since a story or more to the point, a series of stories has touched my heart and soul. This incredible novel has certainly done that!

The interconnected nest of the story was simply beautiful.

Loved this, it’s not often that you find such engaging novels with a focus on this region of the world. I loved listening to a story set in Eastern Anatolia! Narration was soothing, I completely binged this!

Engaging, beautiful and evidently researched

My all time most favourite book. Historical fiction is my go to. The research, the descriptions and clever connections are a work of art. Love this story so much.

Mesmerising, eye opening and so very clever

Slow start reaches through philosophical musing and reaches to a most satisfactory finish. This is highly recommended.

Weave of 3 protagonists stories plus historical accounts

A wonderful story across times and places. The author shows a great insight into the psychology of her characters and the history she places them into is fascinating. There is a theme of sorrow in the stories lead by the destructive nature of humans.

A great epic

This is personally one of the most beautifully written books I have ever read. Elif Shafak’s use of language is so cleverly crafted. Through her words she draws you into a world long lost, A precious world that today continues to shape our modern world. A world that speaks of unfathomable truths that shape the mystery of life. I shall treasure the book and re-read it again.

Ancient Treasures Lost but unrestrained by Time

fantastic weaving of historical fact with human story

I loved every aspect both as a story, sometime deep thought and historical events perhaps not 100% accurate but mostly so as admitted by the author.

Just Msgnificent
